Job Description:
This role will examine and process permit applications, inspect properties, and investigate complaints concerning violations of zoning regulations.
Examples of Duties:
- Accepts zoning applications for review and approval.
- Assists applicants with preparation of required documents for code compliance.
- Receives, researches and evaluates complaints about possible violations of zoning regulations.
- Conducts site inspections to verify compliance with ordinances and approved plans. Ensures property owners and contractors have obtained proper permits and issuing Stop Work Orders when appropriate.
- Prepares and/or reviews required inspection reports; prepares and issues violation notices and citations to property owners and tenants.
- Prepares case materials when legal action is required. Refers cases to municipal court; issues summonses to code violators; provides court testimony as necessary.
- Reviews/approves plans for new construction, alterations and renovations for zoning compliance.
- Notes instances of noncompliance on plans and site inspections and suggests modifications to bring plans/site inspections into compliance.
- Submits reports detailing items of noncompliance to applicants for correction.
- Provides a high level of excellent customer service assistance to internal and external customers.
- Researches and evaluates City permit and property information.
- Maintains filing system.
- Serves in the Permit Center as needed assisting customers by answering questions, providing zoning information, receiving applications and reviewing permits.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- Associate's degree (AA/AS) or equivalent; and one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid state issued driver's license.
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education or experience in land use planning, building construction, or customer service.
- Experience with software systems such as Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam, Energov and GovQA.
Other Necessary Requirements:
- May require evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
- In the event of major storms or other emergency situations, this position may be subject to 24-hour shifts or any other emergency schedule that is necessary to meet the City's needs.
