Zoo Construction and Maintenance Manager

Supervises and provides technical oversight of work related to construction and maintenance of Zoo facilities and property. Supervises subordinates and participates in all maintenance operations; develops work schedules; participates in development budget and management of expenses. Inspects facilities for security, safety and for repair and maintenance. Interacts and provides customer service to all Zoo defined customers. This position participates in a mandatory on-call rotation.

Supervision of Maintenance Workers

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Supervise and evaluate performance of maintenance workers.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Establish and monitor goals for maintenance workers.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Plan, schedule, and assign work duties.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Budget, monitor, and acquire area supplies and resources.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Train and mentor maintenance workers, recognize performance deficiencies, and take corrective action when needed. Responsible for training Zoo staff in the operation of heavy equipment, including Skid Steer, boom lift, scissor lift, etc.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Provide accurate documentation for areas of responsibilities, including employees and facilities.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Participate in evaluating applications for open positions and in selecting final candidates.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Participate in the development of maintenance protocols.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Assess facilities and ensure submission of work requests.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Safely operates all Zoo required equipment for completion of job duties.

\t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

Design, Construct, Evaluate and Troubleshoot

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Maintain skillset in identifying, locating, and correcting defects in building installations, fixtures, and equipment.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Read, comprehend, and instructs from plans, blueprints, and technical drawings.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic problems in various equipment. (ex: HVAC units, lights, automatic doors)

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Oversee and perform carpentry work in constructing and repairing all aspects of exhibits; including but not limited to fences, doors, buildings and other structures; interprets and follows design of customer requirements; use provided plans or design and draw plans; determine materials list and orders materials.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Oversee welding and fabrication of various materials; including but not limited to: animal containment, structures, vehicle repairs, and new construction.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Oversee preventative maintenance, troubleshoot and repair Zoo vehicles, equipment and tools.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Plan and excavate and prepares for concrete, rock, or asphalt on job sites. Executes installation of concrete, rock, or asphalt in various uses.

\t\t\t\t\t

Event Setup and Interdepartmental Support Management

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Oversee and execute setup of special events; including but not limited to providing for electrical needs, setup of lights, tents, props, and other structures.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Oversee design and construction of various props/sets for special events.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Assist veterinary department when requested.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

• Participate in an on-call rotation during emergency situations.

\t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

Experience Required

\t\t\t\t\t

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Three years of professional experience in maintenance or construction or any of the following categories: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or HVAC. Demonstrated experience in the use of a wide variety of electrical and hand tools. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver's license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tPreferred Qualifications: Five years' experience in maintenance and/or construction with two years of supervisory experience in related field. Experience working at an AZA facility. Certifications from a technical college in construction related fields.
