Zookeeper- year round/ seasonal

The seasonal animal keeper position describes work in maintaining a zoo including the animals, exhibits, grounds and facilities in accordance with the standards set forth of an accrediting organization such as the Association of Zoos and Aquariums as stated in Delaware Code Title 3 section 3.0 definition of a 'zoo'. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays as scheduled.

Job Duties:

\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Reports to the Assistant Zoo Manager.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Under supervision performs the full range of essential functions.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Prepares food according to prescribed diets, feeds animals and administers prescribed medications in accordance with protocol direction.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Cleans and performs routine maintenance on animal exhibits and facilities.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Performs grounds and equipment maintenance.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Informs superior about the needs of the animals and the zoo.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Complies with security and safety practices around wild animals for the protection of the public and animals and participates in capturing, restraining, and moving wild animals.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Operates motor vehicles and a variety of light and medium equipment.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • 37.5- or 29.5-hour Schedule: Varied schedule \t\t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Evenings/Weekends/Holidays required.

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Schedule: 37.5 hours per week April- November

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Schedule: 29.5 hours per week December - March

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Approximately five, eight hour shifts a week from spring through fall, cutting back to no more than 29.5 hours per week in winter.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Other duties as assigned.

\t\t\t\t\t\t

  • Casual/Seasonal Employees are not eligible for State Plan Benefits.

  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.   • Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. The recruiting agency may require the applicant to pay for the criminal background check as part of the conditional offer of hire.

  • Upon a conditional offer, the applicant must undergo a pre-employment base line two step tuberculin skin test (TST) as part of the hiring process.

Experience Required

\t\t\t\t\t

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t1. Six months experience in feeding, monitoring diet, and caring for animals in an animal care facility such as a zoo, animal hospital/clinic or animal shelter. \t\t\t\t\t2. Six months experience in recording, interpreting, and communicating observations concerning animal health and behaviors. \t\t\t\t\t3. Knowledge of biology, natural resources, wildlife management or environmental studies. \t\t\t\t\t4. Possession of a valid driver's license (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving). \t\t\t\t\t
