Boeing was established in 1916 by William E. Boeing, an American timber merchant. The company was first called Aero Products Company and was started after U.S. Navy Officer Conrad Westervelt and Boeing developed the B&W, a two-seat, single-engine plane. In 1917, William renamed the enterprise Boeing Airplane Company and began building “flying boats” for the Navy during World War I.
By the 1920s, Boeing expanded to airmail services and Boeing Airplane & Transport Corporation was born to handle both airline and manufacturing functions. But after the Air Mail Act of 1934, the company was required to separate manufacturing from air transport.
During World War II, Boeing’s B-17 Flying Fortress and B-29 Superfortress played important roles in Allied war efforts. Boeing also continued to produce military aircraft after World War II, including the B-47 Stratojet and B-52 Stratofortress. During that time, the company’s commercial airlines faced immense competition from McDonnell Douglas Corporation and Lockheed Martin Corporation, but got the upper hand after developing a turbojet airliner that could cross the North Atlantic.
