Marriott Jobs: A Brief Background
Marriott International was born from humble beginnings and has marked many firsts in the hospitality business. The very first Marriott business was a nine-seat A&W root beer stand opened by J. Willard and Alice Marriott in 1927 in Washington, D.C. They soon grew beyond the simple franchise they had purchased and quickly opened two more locations, split from A&W, and renamed their establishments Hot Shoppes. One of these became the first drive-in restaurant on the east coast.
The Marriott firsts continued in 1937 when Hot Shoppes became the first to offer in-flight catering to the airlines. Passengers departing from Hoover Airport enjoyed boxed lunches from Hot Shoppes. When the Marriotts took Hot Shoppes public in 1953, the shares priced at $10.25 each sold out in two hours.
Four years later, the Marriotts leaped from serving food to providing lodging. They opened the first “motor hotel,” now known as a motel, in Arlington, VA. The new venture was managed by J. Willard and Alice’s son, Bill Marriott. The first international Marriott was built in 1969 in Acapulco, Mexico.
In 1983, the company created its first spin-off, Courtyard Hotels, especially for business travelers. This was followed by mergers, acquisitions, and new branding that included Fairfield Hotels, Resident Inns, Ritz Carlton, Renaissance, Towne Place, and other well-known names to give Marriott the 30 brands it manages today that include 8,000 properties in 139 countries and territories.
