JOB SUMMARY:Performs all laboratory tests necessary for diagnosis and treatment of patients at the request of attending physician(s). Is responsible for reporting results, which are accurate as substantiated by the use of appropriate controls. Performs and demonstrates proficiency and understanding of routing procedures for all areas of the clinical laboratory with minimal supervision. Employee will individualize patient care based upon the age appropriate and developmental needs. Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients serve on the employee's unit. Performs other duties as assigned.PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKSEssential Function 1. Completes required tests, and/or observations of patient's specimens, blood samples or other products required for testing.• Makes sure quality control is performed and that QC is within limits.
• Results are calculated and/or tabulated accurately; reports reflect attention to detail.
• Alerts supervisor when abnormalities or irregularities are encountered in testing, if required.
• Department policies and procedures are followed.Essential Function 2. Verifies that appropriate specimen is being analyzed for correct patient and indicated test.• Checks patient's name against request form.Essential Function 3. Accommodates STAT order or other orders as requested.• Reports STAT results within one hour or as soon as available.
• Reports critical values to physicians as soon as available.
• Verifies critical values to ensure accuracy of testing.
• Ensures that appropriate tests are ordered and charged and routes to appropriate department; provides adequate billing information.Essential Function 4. Records work performed; may prepare summaries or statistical data.• Gives accurate attention required data and reports.

JOB SUMMARY: Performs a variety of Administrative duties in the absence of the Administrative team. Oversees staffing of the Department of Nursing. Primary job duties include, but are not limited to the following: 1) Assumes all Administrative functions in the absence of the Administrative team. 2) Maintains the fiscal viability of the hospital by overseeing staffing of the Nursing Department assuring that patient safety as well as adherence to budgetary guidelines is maintained. Applies constraint in utilizing overtime. 3) Coordinates activities between departments within the hospital to ensure safe high quality care is maintained during the evening night hours, weekends and holidays. Provides a safe environment for patients, employees and others.4) Participates in department/hospital committees and projects as assigned/approved by the Director of Nursing Services.5) Utilizes continuous quality improvement concepts to identify systems or other opportunities for improvement that require action, resolution or referral.6) Communicates in a manner that is effective, therapeutic and may serve as a model for others.7) Ensures that the same standard of nursing care as required by the Hospital, JCAHO, State and Federal Government is maintained.8) Maintains clinical proficiency and develops managerial skills by attending continuing education courses and remaining abreast of current nursing procedures and techniques.9) Delivers direct patient care. PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS Essential Function 1. Acts as the Administrative representative during off-shift hours. Administrative activities to include, but not limited to:a. Identifying and reporting pertinent information to the Administrator on callb. Initiating emergency preparedness procedures (Drill or Actual)c. Release of patient information to public/,mediad. Adjusting staffing according to census/acuity rating system, unit specific guidelines, contractual agreements, and budgetary constraints.c. Assigning staff according to the skill level of the employee, unit need, and within contractual agreements.d. Identifying personnel issues requiring further action and referring those to the appropriate manager or department head.e. Arranging registry needs.f. Receiving call-ins, sick calls, granting urgent medical or personnel leaves and assisting calling in staff for individual units.Essential Function 4. Implements Patient Carea. Bases on union contract supervisors are not to be scheduled as staff more than 50% of the time unless no staffing available. 5. Serves as a role model for unit staff.a. Demonstrates ability to fill staffing role according to established (job description) criteria.b. Demonstrates competence in performing various nursing procedures using established department policies/procedures.c. Acts as a resource to other staff members in problem identification and resolution. 6. Coordinates the use of supplies and equipment on all nursing unitsa. Demonstrates ability to provide supplies and equipment to the units which have the need; prioritizes the delivery of supplies and equipment based on assessed needs.b. Maintains cost containment efforts by prudent use of supplies and equipment; charging supplies and equipment appropriately. 7. Performs various Inter-Department duties.a. DIETARY:? Obtains food for patients and occasionally for physicians and staff.? Provide Dietary with a copy of the midnight census? Explains special dietary needs of patients.b. LABORATORY? Draws blood for alcohol level for outpatients as needed.? Draws blood for cardiac enzymes for inpatients as needed.? Calls on-call laboratory personnel as needed for emergency tests.? Assists laboratory personnel in obtaining specimens as needed.c. X-RAY? Calls in X-Ray personnel as needed for emergency X-Ray examinations.? Assists X-Ray technicians in positioning patients as needed.? Monitors patients in X-Ray when warranted.d. PHARMACY? Prepares and/or delivers drugs after normal hours? Records issued drugs for Pharmacy? Dispenses and labels medication ordered for Emergency Room patients.? Investigates narcotic count discrepancies? Researches IV drug compatibilities or other questions which arise regarding medications.e. MEDICAL RECORDS? Provides a copy of current surgery list (sequence of patients) to the transcribers by 6 AM.? Obtains past medical records when requested by physicians.? Maintains a record of the location of the charts? Encourages the Nursing Staff to complete their charts in medical records.f. ADMITTING? Assesses the patient's level of care needs and determines the correct admissions level.g. DATA PROCESSING? Provides an accurate midnight census.h. RESPIRATORY THERAPY? Administers treatments to Emergency Room patients.? Calls in needed personnel for emergency situations. 8. Performs security and safety checks while making rounds.a. Regularly follows the established hospital procedure for safety and security checks. 9. Is an active participant in the Nursing Management team.a. Attends and actively participates in at least 80% of meetings.b. Will participate in "Ad Hoc" and other committees, acting as a role model for staff by problem solving and producing results within allotted time. Essential Function c. When attending other assigned meetings, minutes with added commentary or notes form the meting will be kept and sent tothe Director of Nursing Services. d. Assists department Managers or Director of Nursing with review and revision of policies and procedures, nursing care plans and standards of care on a regular basis throughout the year as requested. 10. Staff teaching and development.a. Uses flexible approaches to teaching base on assessment of learner's needs and the principles of adult learning.b. Assists other staff in initiating a plan to meet identified learning needs.c. Develops plans to meet educational needs of the unit.Participates in the following:? Inservice? Learning aids?
