<h5>Job Title: Driller </h5>The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a skilled Driller to join our team in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As a Driller, you will operate drill rigs safely and efficiently to conduct geological and geotechnical investigations that support highway design and engineering. You will lead the daily activities of the drill team, oversee field operations, and ensure that all samples areobtained accurately and on schedule. This position requires a strong understanding of drill rig operations, support equipment, and proper maintenance practices. With minimal supervision, you will take ownership of the work, provide hands-on instruction to team members, and ensure that tools, equipment, and testing procedures meet the highest safety and performance standards. Human Resource Contact: 307-777-4356 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: <ul><li>Accountable for knowing how to safely drill and test various soils and rocks to obtain samples for the Geologists to design highways </li><li>Directs the work of drill helpers and flaggers </li><li>This position requires extensive travel (up to 90%) via auto, truck, airplane, etc. </li><li>Gathers supplies needed for the week </li><li>Communicates with WYDOT Personnel, geologists, Principal geologists, Drill supervisors, other agencies, and the private sector </li><li>Works in all types of weather conditions and rugged terrain, works around other heavy equipment, and on busy highways under live traffic conditions </li><li>Operates and maintains drill trucks or transports with drills in a safe manner </li><li>Drill truck or transport duties include safely moving drill trucks or transporting them to drilling locations on various terrain and weather conditions </li><li>Maintains drill, water truck and or transport, and trailer; duties include washing, servicing, greasing as needed, and repairing equipment and augers, bits, A.W. rods, and testing equipment </li><li>Schedules service and maintenance for equipment with a supervisor </li><li>Assists in traffic control, including setting signs, cones, etc., and flagging to help ensure a safe work zone </li><li>Responsible for reporting time and equipment hours or miles as part of overall project cost monitoring </li></ul><h5>Qualifications </h5>PREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: Must have or obtain a Commercial Driver's License <ul><li>Skill in oral communication </li><li>Skill in interpersonal relations </li><li>Ability to weld </li><li>Knowledge of drilling with augers </li><li>Knowledge of drill equipment and ability to troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical problems </li><li>Ability to accept responsibility, make decisions, and learn from superiors </li><li>Knowledge of different drilling techniques - air rotary, mud rotary, and wireline coring </li><li>Ability to lift 100 pounds </li></ul>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education: Bachelor's Degree (typically in Construction) Experience: 0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Drilling Technician OR Education & Experience Substitution: High School Diploma, PLUS 3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Drilling Technician Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: None <h5>Necessary Special Requirements </h5>NOTES:<ul><li>FLSA: Non-Exempt </li><li>Individuals in this position will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing </li><li>The Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug-Free Workplace </li><li>E-Verify: WYDOT uses E-Verify, an Internet-based system, to confirm the eligibility of all newly hired employees to work in the United States. The ideal candidate must have a strong mechanical background and experience with various drilling Methods (mud and air rotary) and experience with submersible pump installation.
