<h3>Position Overview</h3>Thompson Engineering is seeking an experienced Driller to join our Louisiana office. This position requires regular travel to project sites. Thompson Engineering is looking for a Driller Assistant, willing to travel. The Driller Assistant is responsible for assisting the Driller, other Driller Assistants, Soil Technicians and Project Engineers with the daily functions of geotechnical (with occasional environmental) drilling operations for both onshore and offshore project assignments. Essential Functions of the Position 1. Perform variety of drilling duties handling drill rods, wrenches and other tools behind the drill rig equipment 2. Responsible for loading and unloading drilling equipment in and out of the company vehicles and trailers 3. Drives company vehicle to and from work sites 4. On time and consistent attendance 5. Picks up sacks filled with mud and empties the mud into the mixer container 6. Monitors the fluid properties of the drilling fluids (mud) 7. Equipment repairs and maintenance in the field and at shop Other Responsibilities 1. Follow safety procedures 2. Follow quality procedures 3. Other duties as requiredMinimum Requirements 1. Responsibilities <ul><li>Program CNC machines using Fanuc controls to produce high-quality, precision parts. </li><li>Operate CNC lathes and milling machines, including up to 4-axis equipment, to manufacture components to specification. </li><li>Set up and operate 3-, 4th-, or 5th-axis CNC machines, ensuring proper tooling, fixturing, and workholding. </li><li>Apply strong knowledge of machining processes such as turning, milling, drilling, and tapping to optimize part production. </li><li>Lead all CNC programming activities for the shop and serve as the primary expert for CNC language and programming decisions. </li><li>Program parts using Mastercam or Fusion (or similar CAM software) and refine programs for efficiency, quality, and repeatability. </li><li>Interpret and work from blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to develop accurate CNC programs. </li><li>Reverse engineer existing parts when drawings or models are limited or unavailable, and create appropriate CNC programs for production. </li><li>Collaborate closely with machine operators and other shop personnel to ensure programs run effectively on the floor. </li><li>Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and bore gauges to verify dimensions and ensure parts meet tolerance requirements. </li><li>Support the programming and setup of new CNC 4-axis mills and CNC lathes, providing input on in-house programming standards and best practices. </li><li>Produce parts for oil, gas, and chemical valves, as well as other components that support the industry, while maintaining high quality and consistency. </li><li>Troubleshoot machining and programming issues, making adjustments to improve part quality and reduce cycle time. </li><li>Maintain organized program files and documentation for repeat jobs and continuous improvement. </li></ul>Essential Skills <ul><li>Minimum of 5+ years of CNC programming experience. </li><li>Hands-on experience working in a machine shop environment alongside operators. </li><li>Strong proficiency programming CNC machines using Fanuc controls. </li><li>Proven experience programming and running CNC lathes or CNC mills, with at least 5+ years of programming experience on lathe or mill machines. </li><li>Ability to set up and operate 3-, 4th-, or 5th-axis CNC machines. </li><li>Solid understanding of machining processes including turning, milling, drilling, and tapping. </li><li>Experience programming using Mastercam or Fusion (or similar CAM platforms). </li><li>Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints and technical drawings. </li><li>Capability to reverse engineer parts and develop accurate CNC programs from existing components. </li><li>Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and bore gauges. </li><li>Experience producing parts for oil, gas, and chemical valves or related industrial components. </li></ul>Additional Skills & Qualifications <ul><li>10+ years of CNC programming experience is preferred. </li><li>Experience leading or being the primary CNC programmer in a shop environment. </li><li>Experience working with new CNC equipment, particularly 4-axis mills and CNC lathes. </li><li>Comfort providing input on in-house programming standards, tooling strategies, and machining methods. </li><li>Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot machining and programming issues on the floor. </li><li>Effective communication skills to collaborate with operators, quality personnel, and other shop team members. </li></ul>Why Work Here? The environment features CNC lathes and new CNC 4-axis mills with Fanuc controls, supported by CAM software such as Mastercam or Fusion. The shop operates as a collaborative setting where the programming lead works closely with operators and other team members to produce precision parts for demanding industrial applications. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Lafayette, LA.
