The role focuses on delivering standards‑aligned English curriculum while adapting lessons to varied cognitive, behavioral, and emotional needs across Cove Prep’s specialized units. Placement is determined by the Treatment Team to ensure each resident receives the most effective support, with movement between units possible as treatment progresses.<ul><li>Developmental Support Unit — Serves juveniles who are developmentally disabled or developmentally young, using the same core curriculum delivered at a slower pace with more concrete, repetitive instruction.</li><li>Psychiatric Support Unit — Designed for youth with co‑occurring psychiatric conditions such as mood disorders, bipolar disorder, or self‑harm histories.</li><li>Delinquency‑Focused Unit — Supports older juveniles with more extensive delinquency backgrounds, including aggression or additional offenses.</li><li>Honors Unit — For residents demonstrating strong therapeutic and behavioral progress as they move toward discharge.</li></ul>

Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:<ul><li>Identify the educational needs of students then develop formal educational plan or program to meet those needs.</li><li>Create lesson plans to teach a subject(s) and teach students how to study or communicate with others.</li><li>Observe student to evaluate their educational abilities, strengths and weaknesses, working with them to improve their abilities and work on their weaknesses.</li><li>Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups or one-on-one.</li><li>Communicate with family members, counselors, administrators and other teachers on progress.</li><li>Work with students individually to help overcome specific learning challenges, prepare students for standardized tests, as required by state.</li><li>Document educational plans, goals and progress, as required by the facility and the state where the facility is located.</li><li>Supervise classroom and maintain a positive environment for learning.</li><li>Develop and enforce classroom rules and administrative policies.</li><li>Supervise students outside of the classroom setting, such as at lunch time or during detention.</li><li>Adhere to treatment plans and participate in treatment team meetings as requested.</li><li>Demonstrate a positive, empathetic and professional attitude towards customers always.  When patient needs are not met, acknowledge and work to resolve complaints.  Recognize that patient safety is a top priority.</li></ul>OTHER FUNCTIONS: <ul><li>Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.</li></ul>

Qualifications:

Pitt-Johnstown is a comprehensive four-year undergraduate campus of the University of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh System, located 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh on a beautiful 650-acre wooded site in the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania.

The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown seeks a diligent collegial writer/teacher for an assistant professor position in its Department of English Writing. This position will be on a three-year renewable contract commencing in late August 2026. The hires specialization must be in a field of professional writing, e.g. technical writing, professional communication, report, and grant writing, etc. Professional experience in the field, e.g. having worked as a tech writer, is a huge plus for those applying. A PhD in Professional Writing broadly defined is required as this new hire will teach such courses as Technical Writing, Intro to Professional Writing, i.e. writing in or about ones future profession, Business Writing, and Grammar Usage & Style. An ABD in Professional Writing with a firm date set for the dissertation defense is also acceptable. Expertise in digital communication is expected, including the use and abuse of A.I. The hire may also teach Composition and, if the hire has some background in creative writing, may also be called on to teach occasionally in this area. Many of the courses mentioned here serve STEM and Business majors who comprise the majority of students on this campus. The hire will be expected to publish regularly in refereed journals in their field. They will also serve on departmental and university committees. The teaching load is four courses per semester, including two sections of Technical Writing and two other courses. Qualifications other than the degree, publications, and specialization noted above include college teaching in relevant course areas, evidence of teaching effectiveness, commitment to teaching excellence, and strong potential for a sustained record of publication.For full consideration, upload letter of application, vita, transcripts, evidence of teaching effectiveness, one refereed article regarding some facet of professional writing, and three letters of reference directly from source or placement office to Pitts Talent Center site.
