The Inspector is responsible for managing and performing daily construction management and inspection services for various types of VDOT, Design-Build and locality transportation projects. Must have experience in transportation construction, have VDOT certifications, be proficient at reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and shop drawings as well as overseeing construction document controls and enforcing contract compliance.

Seeking highly qualified and experienced transportation Construction Inspectors who have worked on VDOT, locality and/or Design-Build projects. The Inspector is responsible for managing and performing daily construction management and inspection services for various types of VDOT, Design-Build and locality transportation projects. Must have experience in transportation construction, have VDOT certifications, be proficient at reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and shop drawings as well as overseeing construction document controls and enforcing contract compliance. If you’re a seasoned inspector ready to advance your career and contribute to the delivery of critical transportation projects, we’d like to hear from you. Key Responsibilities:<ul><li>Oversee contractor operations to ensure compliance with contract documents, design specifications, and permit requirements.</li><li>Coordinate inspection activities across multiple active work crews.</li><li>Track daily work quantities and complete detailed inspection documentation.</li><li>Prepare daily reports, monthly estimates, and as-built drawings.</li><li>Conduct field inspections, materials testing, and maintain accurate testing logs.</li><li>Review and validate contractor pay estimates.</li><li>Support project engineers with field data, sketches, and reports.</li><li>Maintain project diaries and document deficiencies or field issues.</li><li>Review contractor schedules (CPM and monthly updates).</li><li>Communicate regularly with engineers, owners, and stakeholders to maintain alignment and transparency.</li><li>Uphold a proactive, solution-oriented approach throughout all phases of construction.</li></ul>Minimum Qualifications:<ul><li>High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.</li><li>3+ years of hands-on construction inspection experience with an emphasis on roadway, bridge, utility construction, and pavement rehabilitation.</li><li>Proficiency in interpreting plans, specifications, and technical drawings.</li><li>Strong written and verbal communication skills.</li><li>Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.</li><li>Comfortable working night shifts and overtime as required.</li><li>Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.</li></ul>Certifications & Training (Required):<ul><li>VDOT materials certifications:<ul><li>Asphalt (Asphalt Field Level I & II)</li><li>Soils and Aggregate Compaction</li><li>Pavement Marking</li></ul></li><li>VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Safety or ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS)</li><li>WACEL or ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I</li></ul>Preferred Qualifications:<ul><li>Prior VDOT experience</li><li>Additional VDOT certifications: GRIT, Slurry, Surface Treatment</li><li>DEQ Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector</li><li>DEQ Stormwater Management Inspector</li><li>OSHA-10 Construction Safety</li><li>e-Construction platform experience (PlanGrid, e-Builder, Procore, Fieldwire, etc.)</li><li>Bachelor’s Degree or advanced technical certifications</li></ul>Physical Requirements (Essential Functions):This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions. Duties may include: <ul><li>Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces</li><li>Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles</li><li>Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing</li><li>Remaining in a stationary position—either standing or sitting—for extended periods of time</li><li>Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers</li><li>Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs distances up to100 yards.  </li><li>Driving to and from project sites which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 120 miles round trip.</li><li>Must be able to function safely in an environment with potential risks, including, but not limited to those described in this document.</li><li>Work from heights exceeding 6 feet</li><li>Must be able to wear a properly fitted safety harness and be knowledgeable of the correct use and of regular inspection of the harness and components</li><li>Must be willing to work nights and overtime, when required by the project assignment</li></ul>The work environment may include exposure to a range of environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, and other outdoor elements.
