Position Title:Instructor of Art HistoryCompensation:$3,000-$9,000Department:School of Art - TempStart Date:08/24/2026About this opportunity:The School of Art at Ball State University invites applications for part-time instructors to teach a variety of art history courses, including AHS 101 Art in a Globalized World: Art History before 1500 CE, AHS 102 Art in a Globalized World: Art History after 1500 CE, and upper-level courses in the candidate's area of expertise. Successful candidates may be hired to teach between one and three sections and we offer both online and in-person modalities.Course development support and pedagogical mentoring will be offered. All instructors are expected to communicate regularly with students, provide meaningful and timely assessments, post course information on Canvas, and submit grades and other reports on time.The School of Art has over forty full-time faculty and staff and offers state-of-the-art facilities serving more than 700 undergraduate majors. Programs at the BA, BS, and BFA levels include art education, art history, graphic design, animation production, illustration, game art/design, visual effects, and a studio art program that includes drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, glass, metals + jewelry, sculpture, photography, and video and new media. School of Art students enjoy world-class facilities, with over 73,000 square feet of classroom, gallery, and studio space in the Art and Journalism Building, Applied Technology Building, and the Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass. Students and faculty work closely with David Owsley Museum of Art on campus, among the finest university art collections in the nation. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Mastery of Subject Matter a. Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of the field or discipline. b. Display an ability to interpret and evaluate theories in the field or discipline. c. Connect subject matter with related fields. d. Stay current in subject matter through professional development. 2. Teaching Performance a. Plan and organize instruction in ways which maximize student learning. b. Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies. c. Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse students needs. d. Employ available instructional technology when appropriate. e. Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments. f. Communicate subject matter to students. g. Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials. h. Support classroom efforts to promote student success. 3. Evaluation of Student Learning a. Establish and adhere to learning objectives. b. Develop evaluation methods which fairly measure student progress toward objectives. c. Evaluate and return student work to promote maximum learning. d. Maintain accurate records of student progress. e. Submit final grade rosters, grade books and attendance rosters to division administrators each semester according to established deadlines. 4. Support of College Policies and Procedures a. Meet scheduled classes in accordance with college policy. b. Prepare, distribute and submit syllabi approved course outlines for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies. c. Maintain confidentiality of student information. d. Exercise stewardship of College facilities and materials. 5. Participation in College, Division and Program Activities a. Respond, in a timely fashion, to information requests from College, division and program administrators. b. Contribute, when appropriate, to program and division curriculum development processes. Attend program, divisional and College meetings and events as feasible. 6. Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs a. Maintain familiarity with College goals, mission and long-range plans. b. Contribute to planning and development processes where appropriate. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A qualified faculty member in art history meets the discipline standard through one of two routes: • Possesses an earned masters or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in art or art history, or • Possesses an earned masters or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, in any field with 18 graduate semester hours in art or art history.
