This is often an undergraduate’s first experience in a professional setting, so the internship is focused around three core elements: an introduction to FBH and community mental health as a setting for the practice if psychology and counseling; activities that help students learn the application of their coursework in a practice setting; and exploration of the student’s professional goals and aspirations. An intern is assigned to an FBH program that matches their interest (e.g., child counseling, adult counseling, crisis work, etc) but all interns also get exposure to the breadth and depth of community behavioral health through shadowing in other programs.
