What You Will Do The National Security Research Center (NSRC) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks a full-time, onsite archivist to support our Collections Management Team. We are searching for an Archivist (Library Professional 1) experienced in and excited about digital and physical projects. This position will focus on ontology/taxonomy creation. It will also engage in physical and digital collections management projects. The NSRC, LANL's classified library, preserves and provides access to classified research and development materials related to the development, testing, and production of nuclear weapons. The NSRC's collections contain technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security. Core responsibilities include: <ul><li>Create and refine ontologies, taxonomies, and controlled vocabularies </li><li>Implement digital preservation plans, engage in digital curation and collection development, and support the Lab's digital collections platform(s)</li><li>Create and standardize metadata for multi-format materials</li><li>Process physical collections (arrangement, description, rehousing, finding aid creation) </li><li>Participate in inventory projects for physical and digital collections </li><li>Maintain familiarity with professional best practices through professional development</li></ul> What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Technical Knowledge Knowledge of ontology and taxonomy development. Knowledge of physical and digital archival processing, including best practices for access and long-term preservation. Experience in content management platforms, managing metadata, and utilizing controlled vocabularies to effectively organize and provide access to archival materials. Familiarity with metadata standards, file formatting, and data migration processes. We are looking for a candidate who can readily adapt to new technologies, workflows, and processes and is proactive about staying current with industry advancements. Communication and collaboration Demonstrated ability to take ownership of complex projects, overseeing them from planning through execution with minimal oversight. Strong communication and collaboration skills, effective in both team-based and solo work environments, and committed to fostering a respectful and inclusive workplace. Organization and discretion Strong organizational and research skills to manage and prioritize multiple tasks effectively. Proven ability to handle sensitive information with discretion, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism in all aspects of archival work. Desired Qualifications: <ul><li>Experience with modern ontology building tools, e.g. Protégé, Mobi, etc. </li><li>Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, and Adobe Media Encoder </li><li>Working knowledge of archival content management systems, e.g. ArchivesSpace</li><li>Experience with multi-format digitization in a GLAM setting </li><li>Understanding of LANL cultural and technological history </li><li>Familiarity with command line and Python</li><li>Familiarity with the concept of building semantic data for AI tooling</li><li>DOE Q Clearance</li></ul> Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management. Job Type Full-time Description Summary of Responsibilities: The IAIA Assistant Archivist reports to the IAIA Archivist and assists in the management of the day-to-day activities of the archives and the RCCNA. The assistant archivist is primarily responsible for processing, description, and preservation of analog and born digital materials transferred to the IAIA Archives by IAIA departments. The Assistant Archivist assists in collection development, including selection and acquisition decisions; and oversees occasional student workers, interns, apprentices, and volunteers; and participate in public programming and social media efforts. This position is full time and exempt. Essential Position Functions • Responsible for inventory, selection, arrangement, description, and cataloging tasks in the IAIA Archives. • Assist the IAIA Archivist with planning, policy development, and implementation as well as the oversight of day-to-day operations in the Archives. • Provide training for work-study and interns. • Oversee the identification, transfer, preservation, and description of bon-digital records. • Collaborate in the digitization of archival materials including manuscripts, photographs, and audio-visual materials • Perform in-depth research to establish and verify historical facts; prepare written articles, reports, in-house guides, finding aids, and other publications; locate materials for exhibition. • Deliver presentations and workshops, prepare formal correspondence, and provide occasional reports. • Provide reference assistant to visiting researchers, students, staff, faculty, and alumni. • Other duties as assigned. Requirements Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required: • Bachelors of Arts in museum studies, history, Native American Studies or a comparable degree with coursework demonstrating and ability to understand cultural and historical topics and support the research of undergraduate through doctoral level students • Experience: o 2+ years of previous experience working in Archives, digitization, libraries, museums, public history, records management and research • Demonstrated understanding of the principles that dictate archival appraisal, preservation, arrangement, and description • Demonstrated knowledge of national standards, vocabularies, and best practices including DACS, EAD, MARC, RDA, LCSH, and AAT. • Superior interpersonal, communication and writing skills • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and equity. • Strong problem-solving and project management skills, with an ability to be receptive to changing priorities and to manage multiple work processes and projects simultaneously. • Ability to maintain a high level of detail and accuracy in management and completion of tasks. • Ability to work effectivity in a timely manner on a wide variety of projects concurrently, with concern for the tasks assigned and the goals of the archives. Preferred: • Graduate degree in library science or related field, with an emphasis in archives, museum studies, and or preservation, AND/OR • Graduate degree in history with an emphasis in archives, museums, or public history. • Experience: * 2+ years of previous experience working in Archives, digitization, libraries, museums, public history, records management and research, AND/OR * 2+ years of previous experience working in a public service position in an academic, public history, or research setting, AND/OR * 2+ years of proven successful management experience working on projects with part-time staff, student employees, or volunteers. • Strong commitment to public service, particularly to working with Indigenous communities, researchers, scholars, and elders. • Experience in the acquisition of archival collections, including working with vendors, collectors, and/or donors. • Knowledge of intellectual property and rights management issues related to archival materials. • Experience managing digitization projects and born-digital archival content • Knowledge of legacy audio and moving image media. • Experience working with oral histories.
