This pivotal role is designed to bridge the gap between high-level curricular goals and daily classroom practice. The successful candidate will spearhead the implementation of our new mathematics curriculum, provide peer-to-peer coaching, and evaluate the efficacy of updated pedagogical strategies to ensure high levels of student achievement.Key Responsibilities1. Curricular Oversight & Implementation<ul><li>Lead the rollout of the new math curricula across the department, ensuring alignment with standards.
<ul><li>Achieve true curricular integration across Algebra, Geometry, and Data Literacy.</li><li>Systematically integrate data literacy and computational logic into the core IM and HIM sequences, ensuring these skills are not siloed in Statistics electives.</li><li>Systematically integrate PSAT and SAT prep into the curriculum.</li></ul></li><li>Lead the documentation of the rollout and pacing guides in Atlas in partnership with the teacher(s) of the course.</li><li>Audit and refine pacing guides, assessments, and supplemental materials.</li><li>Monitor data trends to identify "learning gaps" and adjust instructional maps accordingly.</li></ul>2. Instructional Coaching & Mentorship<ul><li>Conduct non-evaluative "walkthroughs" and provide real-time feedback to department colleagues.</li><li>Model "best practice" lessons, specifically focusing on inquiry-based learning and mathematical discourse.</li><li>Model "Integrated" lessons that utilize multiple mathematical lenses simultaneously.</li><li>Provide 1-on-1 coaching for teachers looking to diversify their assessment types (e.g., performance tasks, portfolios, and verbal defense).</li><li>Facilitate internal professional development centered on collaborative planning across teaching teams by course. Advise the Head of Upper School and department chair on external PD.</li></ul>3. Pedagogical Evaluation<ul><li>Modernize assessment & feedback: Lead the shift from purely numerical feedback to progress-based feedback. You will help develop assessments that directly measure Mathematical Thinking alongside traditional procedural fluency.</li><li>Design and implement a framework to measure the impact of new teaching strategies </li><li>Analyze student performance data to determine if pedagogical shifts are closing the achievement gap.</li><li>Close the IM/HIM Experience Gap: Standardize the "student experience" across tracks. You will work to ensure that transition points between Integrated and Honors tracks are not just theoretical, but accessible and supported for all students.</li><li>Modular Schedule and Extended Class Period Innovation: You will lead curriculum and pedagogical design to align with our modular schedule, helping faculty leverage the strengths of six-week blocks to deepen learning rather than rushing content, and our 90-minute class periods.</li><li>Prepare quarterly reports for the administration regarding the progress of the curriculum rollout.</li></ul>4. Classroom Instruction (Reduced Load)<ul><li>Maintain a reduced teaching load (e.g., two-three sections i.e. 6-9 mods) to remain "grounded" in the student experience and serve as a lab classroom for other teachers.</li><li>Lead sessions of targeted instruction around PSAT prep and SAT prep to be embedded in the curriculum.</li></ul>5. Student Support<ul><li>Tutor students in the afternoons (3-4:30 p.m.) and summers</li><li>Oversee, directly support, and communicate required summer remediation</li><li>Serve as the faculty liaison to the math league (club sponsor)</li></ul>6. Advisor<ul><li>Carry out the role and responsibilities of an Upper School advisor to approximately 10 students across grades 9-12</li></ul> Skills & Qualifications<ul><li>Education: Master's Degree in Mathematics Education (K-12) or Curriculum & Instruction preferred.</li><li>Experience: Minimum of 5–7 years of successful high school math teaching experience. A background in Integrated Mathematics with a proven ability to weave Algebra, Geometry, and Data Literacy together.</li><li>Leadership: Demonstrated experience in adult learning, instructional coaching, department head role, and/or mentoring student teachers. Through careful use of assessment data and collaboration with teachers and learning specialists, the Math Specialist helps ensure that mathematics instruction meets students where they are while maintaining high expectations for conceptual understanding and problem-solving.This role is designed not only to strengthen mathematics teaching and learning in the present but also to contribute to the long-term coherence and growth of the program. As a pedagogical thought partner to faculty, the Math Specialist will model best practices in inquiry-based instruction, mathematical discourse, and differentiation. The Mathematics Specialist will also serve as the lead teacher for Kindergarten and First Grade computer science classes, introducing foundational computational thinking skills through developmentally appropriate instruction.
