<h2>Overview</h2>ABOUT THE POSITIONVHB’s Environmental Resources Group in Atlanta has an opening for a 6 month temporary Environmental Specialist position to work with our expanding ecology group. This position is anticipated to begin in early June 2026 and extend until the end of October 2026. The normal work schedule would be Monday-Friday approximately 40 hours per week.  On occasion, the work may require more than 40 hours in a week.    This position requires regular outdoor work and some travel.  Outdoor work conditions could include extreme heat and cold temperatures in wet and dry weather.  Travel would generally consist of day trips with some overnight stays.  Occasionally, work trips could extend for a week or more.  Additionally, some flexibility is required in terms of daily project destinations/locations and hours of availability due to weather frequently and suddenly altering plans. Responsibilities<ul><li>Travelling to various monitoring locations to collect water samples, record in situ water quality data, and measure stream flow from creeks and rivers</li><li>Monitoring environmental conditions at construction sites</li><li>Assist with data entry and field equipment maintenance</li><li>Assist with fish community surveys </li><li>Coordinate and communicate with internal and external project team members</li></ul>Skills and Attributes<ul><li>Working knowledge of biological and environmental processes</li><li>Ability to work efficiently and perform tasks in a timely manner with attention to detail (independent problem-solving and critical thinking are important to this position)</li><li>Motivated to learn and effectively work in a team environment and office setting</li><li>Able to effectively convey technical information (strong written and verbal communication skills are paramount)</li><li>Strong organizational skills</li><li>Knowledge and ability to operate a variety of software programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook</li></ul>Minimum Qualifications<ul><li>0-1 year of fieldwork experience in natural habitats, whether through coursework or professional experience</li><li>BS in natural science related field (e.g., Environmental Science, Biology, Landscape Architecture, Fisheries and Wildlife, Ecology, Natural Resources)</li><li>OSHA 40 hr. HAZWOPER certification and annual refresher certifications required for site investigation & remediation services</li><li>Internship experience preferred</li><li>Possess a valid driver’s license and the capability to drive to multiple sites per day </li></ul>Building what’s next, together.Our people make the difference. This is where technical curiosity, data skills, and a passion for sustainability all come together.What You'll Actually Be DoingEnvironmental Monitoring & Compliance<ul><li>Help keep power plants in compliance with air, water, and waste regulations.</li><li>Support monitoring systems (like CEMS) by troubleshooting equipment, reviewing data, and helping prepare required reports.</li><li>Organize and manage environmental documentation so everything stays audit‑ready.</li></ul>Research, Analysis & Strategy<ul><li>Track new environmental laws and trends to understand how they could affect our power plants.</li><li>Help write internal memos, issue briefs, and white papers that guide company decisions.</li><li>Contribute to presentations and materials used to brief senior leadership.</li></ul>Cross‑Team Collaboration<ul><li>Work with Plant Operations, Safety, Fuels, Planning, and other departments to support environmental programs.</li><li>Participate in internal and external audits as you build your understanding of our Environmental Management System.</li><li>Support environmental requirements for new generation projects (including permitting and NEPA work).</li></ul>Continuous Learning<ul><li>Join industry groups and professional organizations to stay up to date on environmental, technical, and policy developments.</li><li>Bring back learnings to help assess risk, improve processes, and support smarter decision‑making across the company.</li></ul>What You Need to BringEducation<ul><li>Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, or another technical field or equivalent hands‑on experience.</li></ul>Experience (based on level)<ul><li>Associate: 0–3 years in environmental or energy policy/compliance (energy industry experience is a plus).</li><li>Level I: 3+ years</li><li>Level II: 6+ years</li><li>Equivalent experience options available (5+, 7+, 10+ years respectively).</li></ul>Skills<ul><li>Strong analytical and communication skills.</li><li>Ability to collaborate and solve problems with different teams.</li><li>Comfortable working with data and writing up findings.</li><li>Proficient with Microsoft Office</li><li>Bonus points for experience with Maximo, AutoCAD, or StackVision</li></ul>License<ul><li>Valid Georgia Driver's License</li></ul>What to Expect<ul><li>Travel: ~25% during business hours; <10% overnight</li><li>Hours: Power plants run 24/7 - you'll mostly work normal business hours but must be reachable for occasional off‑hour needs</li><li>Impact: You'll play a key role in helping generate safe, reliable power while protecting the environment and supporting cleaner energy futures</li></ul>  Job Posted by ApplicantPro
