Summary Functions as an emergency response medical professional that administers immediate medical care to victims of accidents, violence, and sudden illnesses such as cardiac arrests or strokes. Provides pre-hospital and intra-hospital advanced life support care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility.

 Job Duties <ul><li> Represents the ambulance service while on duty at public service functions, expositions, and other public events and provides ambulance stand by services when necessary. </li><li> Documents full assessment and treatments in patient care charting software. </li><li> Cares for patients in psychiatric, medical, and traumatic crisis by providing medical, traumatic, and therapeutic services. </li><li> Serves as a member of a two-member ambulance crew responding to emergency and non-emergency calls. </li><li> Operates equipment such as bag valve mask resuscitators, external defibrillators, and electrocardiograms for advanced life support applications. </li><li> Assesses the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed such as stabilization, immobilization, lifting, and moving of victims from scene of any accident or catastrophe. </li><li> Responds to instructions from a dispatcher and drives and operates specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed. </li><li> Administers drugs via injection, intravenous procedures, or oral administration under the direction of a physician. </li><li> Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to obtain instructions regarding treatment. </li><li> Cleans and decontaminates ambulance after transporting or treating any patient with infectious disease and reports infectious disease to relevant authorities. </li></ul> Minimum Qualifications <ul><li> High School Diploma/GED </li><li> Ability to assess needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families. </li><li> Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools. </li><li> Demonstrates age-specific competencies in the care of neonates, infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers, school aged, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. </li><li> Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions. </li><li> Must be able to apply advance knowledge and training, developing and executing a plan of care, and rapidly intervene in life-saving procedures. </li><li> ACLS - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire and </li><li> PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire and </li><li> American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire and </li><li> EMSVO Certification - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire and </li><li> PA EMT-P Paramedic - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire or </li><li> NREMT-Paramedic-National Reg of EMT-Medic - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire and </li><li> DL - Driver's License_PA - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire </li></ul> Preferred Qualifications <ul><li> Associate's Degree </li><li>2 years experience in advanced life support service </li><li>1 year pre-hospital paramedic experience. </li><li> NREMT-Paramedic-National Reg of EMT-Medic - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire or </li><li> Pre-Hospital RN - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire </li></ul> Physical Demands Lift over 50 lbs. <ul><li>Complies with all applicable rules and regulations of the West Virginia Racing Commission and the West Virginia Department of Health & Human Resources, Office of EMS.</li><li>Complies with the Security/EMS Department Standard Operating Procedures.</li><li>Complies with the Exposure Control Policies for blood-borne and air-borne pathogens.</li><li>Conducts patient care equipment inspections and ensure proper stocking at the beginning of each shift. </li><li>Cleans and/or decontaminates durable patient care equipment</li><li>Clean and/or decontaminates the ambulances as needed.</li><li>Restocks expendable supplies and disposable equipment utilized for patient care immediately after the incident.</li><li>Performs assessments, interventions, and treatment of trauma and medical patients in accordance with the current West Virginia Advanced Life Support & Basic Life Support Protocols. </li><li>Performs appropriate assessments, interventions and treatment for trauma and medical patients in accordance with current West Virginia Advanced Life Support Scope of Practice.</li><li>Operates telephone and radio communications equipment effectively to transmit patient information to the appropriate care facility and/or with Security Control.</li><li>Provides verbal reports of patient interactions and conditions to incoming EMS units, receiving facilities, doctors and nurses involved in the patients’ care</li><li>Provides written documentation of patient care assessments, conditions, interventions and outcome on West Virginia run report prior to leaving the hospital. </li><li>Provides written documentation of exposures to blood or body fluids immediately in accordance with the Security/EMS department Exposure Control policy.</li><li>Assists EMS Department Staff when requested within the EMT-P scope of practice.</li><li>Works with other licensed EMS agencies as needed for our operation or in a Mass Casualty Incident situation.</li><li>Enthusiastically supports, actively promotes and demonstrates superior customer service in accordance with department and company standards and programs</li><li>Participates in meetings and training as required.</li><li>Maintains complete patient confidentiality and company information at all times</li><li>Utilizes effective communication tools to ensure that consistent, accurate and timely information is provided through the shifts.</li><li>Ensures that behavior and appearance are in compliance with established standards.</li><li>Maintains a professional work environment with management and staff. </li><li>Performs all job duties in a safe and responsible manner.</li><li>Performs other duties as may be assigned by department and/or company management.</li></ul>

Notice is hereby given that the Martinsburg Fire Civil Service Commission is accepting applications to test for the position of Firefighter/EMT-Basic in the Martinsburg Fire Department. The individuals that successfully satisfy all the requirements will remain on a list of eligible candidates for a period of three years in the event an opening does occur. In order to be placed on the list of eligible candidates, an interested person must:<ul><li>Be between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time of application. (Copy of birth certificate MUST be submitted along with application).</li><li>Apply online no later than12:00 (noon) on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.</li><li>Undergo and achieve a passing score on a competitive written examination on Friday, June 5, 2026.</li><li>Undergo and achieve a passing score on a physical agility teston Saturday, June 6, 2026. Failure to achieve a passing score will eliminate candidates from proceeding further through the process. </li><li>Appear for appropriate oral interviews. </li><li>Undergo a complete medical examination testing the applicant's general physical condition in a manner prescribed by the Commission. </li><li>Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Copy MUST be submitted along with application. </li><li>Must possess a valid driver's license. Copy MUST be submitted along with application. </li><li>Must obtain certification as an EMT-Basic by the WV Office of Emergency Medical Services within one-hundred-fifty (150) days of employment with the City of Martinsburg Fire Department. Individuals with a current EMT-Paramedic or EMT-Intermediate certification are encouraged to apply. </li><li>Must live within 50 air miles of the Courthouse at the corner of S. Queen Street and W.
