This is a travel-based position requiring near 100% travel, working on railroad track projects throughout the region and potentially nationwide.This role is ideal for candidates who are comfortable being on the road, working in different locations, and supporting rail operations wherever needed.You will play a critical role in maintaining track integrity, supporting safe rail operations, and ensuring all work meets FRA regulations and company standards.Key Responsibilities:Safely operate backhoes, excavators, loaders, and other heavy equipment used in railroad track maintenance Perform railroad track maintenance including tie replacement, rail repair, surfacing, and general track work Follow all FRA regulations and company safety policies Identify track defects, geometry issues, and safety concerns Work closely with crew members to complete projects efficiently and safely in active rail environments Required Qualifications: Minimum 2+ years of railroad track maintenance (MOW) experience required Experience operating backhoes and heavy equipment in a railroad or track environment required Strong understanding of railroad safety standards and FRA compliance Ability to travel extensively (near 100%) and work away from home regularly Ability to work outdoors in a physically demanding environment Strong safety mindset and job-site awareness Preferred: Experience with tampers, regulators, or other rail-specific equipment Experience working in Class I or short line railroad environments Work Environment & Travel: This is a continuous travel position Projects may be located across multiple states Employees should expect to be away from home for extended periods Work is performed in outdoor rail environments in varying weather conditionsRoad & Rail Services offers competitive pay based on experience and skill, stable full-time employment, hands-on training, high-quality equipment, and a professional work environment. This position is based out of Frankfort, Kentucky and requires up to 100% travel. The successful candidate will operate production tampers on railroad maintenance projects throughout the region and across the United States.This is not an entry-level position. Candidates must have prior tamper operating experience and be comfortable working in a travel-based environment supporting track maintenance and rehabilitation projects.Key Responsibilities Safely operate railroad tampers on maintenance and construction projects Perform track surfacing and alignment work to maintain proper track geometry Conduct pre-trip and post-shift inspections of equipment Identify equipment issues and communicate maintenance needs promptly Work closely with supervisors and crew members to complete projects safely and efficiently Follow all FRA regulations, railroad operating rules, and company safety policies Support other track maintenance activities as needed Maintain accurate records related to equipment operation and inspections Required Qualifications Previous experience operating a railroad tamper is required Strong understanding of railroad track maintenance practices and track geometry Ability to read and follow project specifications and instructions Commitment to workplace safety and FRA compliance Ability to travel extensively (up to 100%) and work away from home for extended periods Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions Ability to perform physically demanding work in an active railroad environment Preferred Qualifications Experience operating Jackson tampers strongly preferred Additional experience with regulators, ballast equipment, or other production maintenance machines Experience working on Class I, regional, or short line railroads Work Environment & Travel Up to 100% nationwide travel Projects may be located across multiple states Employees should expect extended periods away from home Work is performed outdoors in active railroad environments and varying weather conditionsRoad & Rail Services offers competitive compensation based on experience, stable full-time employment, ongoing training opportunities, quality equipment, and a professional work environment. Responsibilities:<ul><li>Operate specialized equipment. (i.e. Backhoe, Crew Truck, Excavator, Prentice Truck etc.) in support of inspection, installation, and maintenance of railroad track.</li><li>Performs preventative maintenance on heavy or specialized equipment.</li><li>Maintains proper equipment appearance and cleanliness.</li><li>May perform labor duties as needed.</li><li>Communicates with supervisor throughout the job process.</li><li>Ensures working conditions are safe and that proper PPE is being used as job duties require.</li><li>Follow DOT regulations; ensuring proper permits and driving regulations are followed.</li></ul>Education and Experience:<ul><li>Demonstrated operation experience and equipment knowledge.</li><li>CDL-B License and demonstrated performance operating CDL-B required vehicles.</li><li>Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot simple mechanical failures.</li><li>Previous experience in railroad construction or maintenance preferred.</li></ul>Physical Requirements:<ul><li>Able to perform physical strenuous work</li><li>Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch</li><li>Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs</li><li>Requires occasional use of 30lb claw bar to remove spikes, requiring application of 50lbs of force</li><li>Requires occasional use of 10lb sledge hammer to drive spikes, requiring application of 75lbs of force</li><li>Able to walk, climb, and maintain balance on equipment, stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, rails and ballast in a safe manner</li><li>Able to navigate into confined spaces if necessary</li><li>Work is performed outside in varying types of environmental conditions.</li></ul>Job Dimensions: Interfaces with all levels of employees and management.
