Within BCD, the Antimicrobial Resistance Unit (ARU) aims to 1) conduct surveillance for and facilitate rapid response to high-priority multidrug-resistant organisms, 2) undertake epidemiologic research on the transmission of these organisms in the community, and 3) promote judicious antibiotic prescribing practices and infection prevention efforts by disseminating resources to NYC stakeholders, including data on local antibiotic use and resistance trends. The Bureau of Communicable Diseases (BCD), part of the Division of Disease Control, is responsible for the surveillance, prevention, and control of over 70 infectious diseases including foodborne, enteric, waterborne, respiratory, zoonotic and vector-borne diseases.
