REPORTS TO: Full-Time Staff CLASSIFIED: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Seasonal (May 18 – August 21) MISSION: To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. JOB SUMMARY: The Youth Development Professional will be a positive role model to support, lead, and encourage young people. You will have the chance to form lasting relationships, encourage positive behavior, and design activities to promote the overall welfare of participants, all while increasing your knowledge of social work, behavioral studies, and management skills. Manager: Logan Haak/Coleen Lawrence Location: Elmen Center Hours: around 8 hours or more per week Position Duration: Academic Year and/or Summer Term PURPOSE OF JOB: The purpose of this position is to supervise people using the pool; to provide lifesaving and rescue skills, and knowledge as needed. The lifeguards are responsible for enforcing pool policies, maintaining and cleaning aquatic equipment, ensuring the safety of swimmers, assisting swimmers in aquatic exercise program development, acting in a professional manner, and promoting the Recreational Services department, programs, and mission. SPECIAL SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, and TRAINING REQUIRED FOR JOB: The lifeguard must posses strong people skills, conflict resolution skills, enthusiasm, and assertiveness. Other specific skills that would be beneficial include an understanding of exercise and aquatic exercise program principles, and an understanding of the various types of equipment used in the pool area. Current CPR, AED, Lifeguard Training, and First Aid certifications are required. SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: <ul><li>Administrative:<ul><li>The lifeguard will be expected to:<ul><li>Attend monthly position training sessions, and other meetings as needed and indicated by the Director of Recreational Services. </li><li>Be accountable for hour's assigned, approving substitutions with the recreation coordinator and team leader. </li><li>Arrive early for assigned shifts. Be prepared to stay until all necessary job responsibilities are completed at the end of a shift. </li><li>Accurately and thoroughly complete the appropriate lifeguard checklists during each shift. </li><li>Adhere to and enforce all pool policies. </li></ul></li></ul></li><li>Emergency:<ul><li>The lifeguard will be aware of all emergency procedures for the pool and be prepared to:<ul><li>Observe regular fire and tornado procedures, including evacuating the building or directing people to the appropriate location inside the building. </li><li>Respond to, and manage appropriately according to the emergency plan, any injury, water or deck rescue situation, and/or blood spill. </li><li>Know emergency numbers and immediately make use of these numbers when emergency situations arise (Campus Safety #4014, Police/Fire #9-911). </li><li>Notify the Director of Recreational Services and Building Supervisor of unusual circumstances which may involve the Physical Plant, such as heat, air conditioning, plumbing, lights, pool problems, and power surges. </li></ul></li></ul></li><li>Security:<ul><li>The lifeguard will:<ul><li>Close and lock the pool at the end of each designated shift. Method of Evaluation: The lifeguard will be evaluated on a formal basis 1 to 2 times each year by the recreation coordinator. This evaluation will involve a written evaluation by the recreation coordinator, as well as a self-evaluation filled out by the lifeguard. The lifeguard will be periodically evaluated by the Building Supervisor and their respective Team Leader. This will include a written evaluation by the Building Supervisor or Team Leader, and will be covered verbally.
