Playing a key role in advancing mobility independence and community inclusion, the Volunteer Coordinator recruits and manages a diverse group of volunteers to support individuals learning to use the public transit system safely and independently. This includes volunteers who are veterans, seniors, individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD), wheelchair users, parents with children, members of the LGBTQ+ community, teens and young adults, and as many bilingual volunteers as possible.

SUMMARY :The Volunteer Coordinator (VC) will develop and managing a volunteer program that supports individuals in learning to use the public transit system safely and independently.The program manager coordinates recruitment, training, scheduling, and supervision of volunteers who provide transit education and navigation assistance. Participants may earn a monthly bus pass after completing four (4) verified hours of volunteer service.Playing a key role in advancing mobility independence and community inclusion, the Volunteer Coordinator recruits and manages a diverse group of volunteers to support individuals learning to use the public transit system safely and independently.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESRecruit, screen, interview, orient, and train volunteers to assist individuals with trip planning, reading schedules, understanding fares, and navigating transit routes.Process criminal background checks in accordance with the agency’s strict policies and procedures to protect both the organization and its clients.Maintain a regular presence at the Spokane Transit Authority, Plaza Kiosk at least two (2) times per month to increase program visibility and community awareness.Receive volunteer program referrals or inquiries from the Program Director and respond promptly, processing requests while treating both participants and volunteers with courtesy, respect, and supportive language.Develop and adapt structured volunteer roles and service opportunities aligned with transit education goals.Recruit and coordinate a small pool of volunteers to serve as “bus buddies,” accompanying individuals who are capable of using the bus but feel safer traveling with a companion. This support is especially beneficial for people with disabilities who may benefit from additional confidence when riding transit independently.Track, verify, and document volunteer service hours to ensure eligibility for monthly bus pass incentives.Maintain accurate records of volunteer screening, participation, training completion, and bus pass distribution.Coordinate with community-based organizations and transit partners to support program delivery.JOB DUTIESConduct presentations, volunteer orientations, and community outreach sessions. Demonstrate the ability to articulate the social and individual benefits of public transportation systems and volunteer engagement.Schedule and supervise volunteers providing transit education support in community settings and on transit routes.Periodically gather volunteers individually or in groups to assist with administrative support tasks, such as folding brochures and preparing outreach materials.Build relationships with community partners and organizations to strengthen collaboration and reduce transportation barriers.Gather feedback to measure how well the volunteer program is meeting community needs through stakeholder meetings annually and participant surveys quarterly.Maintain clear and supportive communication with volunteers, participants, and families through regular check-ins and proactive updates. QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of volunteer coordination principles and community engagement strategies.Practical understanding of transportation systems and services, or the ability to quickly gain proficiency.Passion for working with diverse and underserved populations.An outgoing, relationship-oriented mindset with the ability to build rapport with a wide range of community members.Demonstrated ability to work with maintain confidential information, following confidentiality regulations.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Bus riding training may involve walking, standing for periods of time, and traveling on public transit routes. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEExperience working or volunteering in community programs, nonprofit organizations, or transit-related services; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working and communicating with older adults, individuals with disabilities, or underserved populations is preferred. Proven success in community partnership building is preferred. Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its application within transit systems, along with familiarity with federal grant compliance requirements such as Title VI is also preferred.LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read and interpret documents, rules and regulations, and policy and procedure manuals for transportation providers. Ability to complete written reports and correspondence in a timely manner. Bilingual skills may be reflected in the pay scale. Experience de-escalating difficult situations.DEPENDABILITYHigh commitment to task follow-through, accuracy, and timeliness.COMPUTER SKILLSThe position requires use of travel apps and trip planning tools (on-the-job training will be provided). Data entry skills are required. Ability to learn new software is essential.INDEPENDENT JUDGMENTMust be able to work independently and demonstrate sound judgment. The ideal candidate has a creative mindset, critical thinking skills, planning ability, and flexibility. Potential for growth into leadership roles is preferred. This program was designed in recognition that some travel training clients require longer-term support. It ensures that training remains available for as long as a client needs it, rather than being limited to a set timeframe. The program also encourages participants to connect with volunteers who share similar backgrounds or experiences, helping foster comfort, confidence, and peer support during the learning process.Our goal is to build a stable volunteer force that reflects the diversity of the community. This includes volunteers who are veterans, seniors, individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD), wheelchair users, parents with children, members of the LGBTQ+ community, teens and young adults, and as many bilingual volunteers as possible.LEARNING AND CHANGEMust learn quickly and adapt to change easily. The Volunteer Coordinator will stay connected to local transportation news, route changes, and service updates through newsletters, transit alerts, and in-person meetings.CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKMust undergo preliminary and annual criminal background checks and meet standards set by agency contracts.PAID TRAININGVolunteer management training, transit system training, ADA compliance training, customer service training, and safety training may be provided by the agency. A training plan will be developed for the selected candidate. Wage 20.00Hours: Part Time, 25 hours a week
