The City of Montrose operates under a council/manager form of government. This system of local government combines the strong political leadership of elected officials in the form of a council, with the managerial experience of an appointed local government manager.

Montrose, Colorado is the type of area people think about when they hear “Colorado”. Situated in southwestern Colorado on the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains, Montrose is home to the Black Canyon National Park and offers scenic mountains, valleys, canyons, mesas, lakes and rivers, plus all the recreational activities that accompany these natural wonders such as hiking, mountain biking, skiing, fishing, camping, boating and more. Montrose has mild summers and winters with minimal snow accumulation in the city, making a great four season playground. Surrounded by natures majestic beauty, Montrose boast a mild climate year round & activities sure to entice all enthusiasts.

The community made Outdoor Life magazine’s list of “Top 200 Towns for Outdoorsmen” in 2010 because it is surrounded by 882,760 acres of public lands where adventure seekers can hunt, fish, camp, hike, bike, and go four wheeling. Montrose is the gateway to the Black Canyon National Park, one of Colorado’s most remarkable scenic treasures, where plunging walls descend 2,722 feet to the canyon floor. The North Vista Trail is listed as one of the “Top 10 Canyon Hikes in the U.S. Parks” National Geographic magazine.
