About Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council
Saratoga County Economic Opportunity Council is a private, nonprofit community action agency serving Saratoga County in upstate New York. We are the designated anti-poverty agency, dedicated to providing and promoting opportunities for individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency. We are an advocacy organization assisting families and individuals in developing solutions to promote healthy, thriving families and caring community partners. We provide services coordinated at our main office in Ballston Spa and throughout the county schools. Services include Head Start, WIC, Energy Services/Weatherization, Crisis Intervention/Advocacy, Latino Community Advocacy, Vita Tax Services, Food Pantry, Mobile Food Pantry and a Soup Kitchen.
In 1964, Congress passed the Economic Opportunity Act, which led to the establishment of a network of Community Action Agencies at the local level to alleviate the impact of poverty in communities and help individuals, children and families of low income to become self-sufficient and improve the quality of their lives. Each local EOC is governed by a board of directors comprising local businesses, government and community representatives, and is supported in part by public funds. In the Nation, there are approximately 1,100 Community Action Agencies (CAA) and in NYS, there are 51 designees. Saratoga County EOC is one of those 51 CAA’s and we serve beside them all to support the residents of NYS in efforts to be sustainable.
