Manufacturing Controller Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- Hands-on manufacturing finance experience
- Strong understanding of GAAP and cost accounting
- Experience with long production cycles and WIP accounting
- Knowledge of manufacturing costing, job costing, inventory, and financial reporting
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, month-end close, and P&L reporting
- Ability to identify cost savings and improve profitability
- Strong communication skills with both executives and operations teams
- Previous experience as a Manufacturing Controller, Plant Controller, Division Controller, Corporate Controller, or similar manufacturing finance leader
Manufacturing Controller Preferred Background & Skills
- Manufacturing of large industrial or engineered products
- Heavy equipment, process equipment, dryers, asphalt plants, or similar industries
- Experience supporting multiple facilities or business units
- Background in project-based manufacturing and complex WIP accounting
- Experience working with operations, engineering, purchasing, production, and sales
- ERP experience
- Comfortable working in privately held or entrepreneurial companies
- Enjoys spending time on the manufacturing floor learning the business
Manufacturing Controller Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Analyze manufacturing costs, labor, overhead, margins, and product pricing
- Maintain accurate WIP, inventory, and cost accounting
- Review manufacturing variances and recommend improvements
- Build budgets, forecasts, dashboards, and financial reports
- Prepare cost estimates for new products and projects
- Identify opportunities to improve margins and operational performance
- Partner with production, engineering, purchasing, operations, and leadership
- Strengthen financial processes, internal controls, and reporting
- Support audits and ensure compliance
- Help leaders understand financial performance and make better business decisions
