General Function:

The purpose is to provide a qualified college student with an Internship experience in the field of education. Creates an environment favorable to learning and personal growth. Helps maintain effective rapport with pupils and motivates pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to obtain a good educational foundation. Establishes effective rapport with staff and students by assisting students in developing positive feelings toward themselves and others.

Education/Training/Experience

(Basic minimum requirements are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District.)

Minimum: Current student in the education field requiring Observation/Internship experience.

Preferred: Bilingual: English-Spanish

Essential Job Functions

Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Demonstrate punctuality at the assigned school and meetings.
  • Consistently demonstrate professional conduct in actions and attire.
  • Adhere to school policies and procedures.
  • Work the school duty schedule of the host teacher.
  • Show an interest and initiative in assuming the increasing responsibilities of a classroom teacher.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management.
  • Immediately notify the mentor teacher and college coordinator of absences.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information received about students or school personnel.
  • Be fair, impartial, and consistent in working with children.
  • Be aware of and meet all deadlines for assignments.
  • Review the course syllabi and to discuss requirements with the mentor teacher.
  • Submit daily lesson plans using New Mexico Standards to the host teacher for feedback and suggestions.
  • Include modifications and adaptations according to IEP provisions.
  • Accept feedback provided by host teachers and program coordinators.
  • Establishes and maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning by managing appropriate student behavior.
  • Cooperates with staff and support personnel in helping students with health, attitude, learning, and behavioral problems.
  • Utilizes technology in the classroom.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Resources Used in Performing the Job Include (but are not limited to):

A wide variety of instructional materials and resources, including electronic/digital equipment. Standard office and classroom equipment, including computers, tablets, apps, copiers, and phone systems.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Regularly required to stand; move throughout the room and/or facility; communicate verbally and electronically; use hands to finger, handle,, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and

arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, ,balance, and drive. Regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 25 pounds; occasionally required to lift or exert force of up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions:

Duties performed in typical school settings that may include offices, music room, classrooms, playground/athletic fields, gym, and auditorium. The teacher will be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, noise, and hazards. Occasionally required to travel to other facilities within the District.

Personal Accountability:

  • Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
  • Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
  • Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
  • Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
  • Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment, including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/ special application.
  • Protects the district's resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  • Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
