About Us

Since 1990, the Lee County Port Authority has provided outstanding internship opportunities for college students. We take pride in helping students learn about every aspect of airport management.

• In 2027, LCPA will offer three internship programs: Airport Operations and Management, Emergency Management and General Aviation/FBO Operations and Management
• Internships generally last 10 to 12 weeks, beginning in May, with a pay rate of $15 per hour.
• Those selected for LCPA internships must be prepared to meet high-performance standards and write a comprehensive paper about their experience.

Requirements for the internship program are as follows:

• Students must be enrolled at an accredited college/university pursuing a career in airport/aviation management, operations, planning or a closely related field.
• Must be a full-time student, at a credit level of sophomore or above.
• Students must submit a college-graded paper, which was written within the previous six months of the application date.
• Resume must include student's goals and objectives.

Airport Operations and Management

10- to 12-week paid internship

Schedule includes all shifts, day and night

This unique program allows students to experience how an airport functions. Interns rotate through various departments and learn how an airport operates in the public eye and behind the scenes. Scheduled rotations, based on individual interests, may include operations, Lee County Port Authority Police Department, planning & development, engineering, environmental compliance, finance, Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting, maintenance, communications & marketing, as well as Page Field, our general aviation airport.

Emergency Management

10- to 12-week paid internship

Schedule includes all shifts, day and night

The intern will assist with meetings, training and development of various emergency functions and tabletop training exercises on a variety of topics that may include active shooter, hurricane preparedness, airport evacuation, family assistance and care team programs, etc. Scheduled rotations throughout various emergency departments, such as airport operations, Lee County Port Authority Police Department, Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting, as well as Page Field. Tours and meetings may be set up with community responders, such as Lee County Emergency Management, Florida Department of Health, Red Cross and Lee Health, based on schedule and interests.

Relevant coursework should include: emergency management, airport management and FEMA courses such as the National Incident Management System (NIMS/ICS). Familiarity with FAR Part 139 and other aviation related regulations would be helpful.

General Aviation/FBO Operations and Management

10- to 12-week paid internship

Schedule: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some after hours, as needed; depending on current airport projects

This internship is hosted at Page Field (FMY) and will offer an in-depth look at the operations of a general aviation airport and fixed-base operator (FBO). The intern will work hand-in-hand with the airport and FBO administrative, operational and maintenance teams. Day-to-day activities include routine airport & FBO inspections, participating in planning meetings, conducting research and assisting with special projects as assigned. Additional learning opportunities may involve familiarization with other aviation businesses, FBO customer service and line service functions, safety programs, maintenance programs and finance. This internship will also have the option to visit other departments at the commercial service airport, RSW.

A professional demeanor and appearance, experience with office productivity software and excellent speaking, writing and analytical skills are desired for all successful internship candidates.
