2L Summer Associate - Patent Prosecution (Engineering Background Required)

About the Opportunity

Miller Johnson is seeking second year law students to join our 2027 Summer Associate Program in our Detroit office. Our Summer Associate Program provides law students with meaningful legal assignments, exposure to sophisticated client matters, and opportunities to build relationships across the firm through mentorship, feedback, and professional development. Summer Associates work closely with attorneys on substantive projects and gain practical insight into life at a full-service business law firm.

What You'll Do

As a Summer Associate, you will:

• Conduct legal research and analysis to support client matters.
• Draft legal memoranda, motions, contracts, and other legal documents under attorney supervision.
• Participate in client meetings, strategy discussions, internal team meetings, and training opportunities when available.
• Observe court proceedings, depositions, negotiations, or client meetings when appropriate.
• Work collaboratively with attorneys and fellow Summer Associates on legal projects.
• Participate in mentorship, networking, feedback, and professional development opportunities throughout the summer.

Summer Associates may also have the opportunity to gain exposure to additional practice areas depending on business needs and workflow throughout the summer.

What You Bring

Successful candidates should possess:

• Current enrollment as a second-year law student with an expected graduation date in 2028.
• A bachelor's degree or advanced degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace or astronautical engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• Patent bar eligibility is preferred.
• A genuine interest in building a legal practice focused on patent prosecution.
• Strong academic credentials.
• Excellent research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
• The ability to understand and communicate complex technical concepts.
• Demonstrated professionalism, initiative, judgment, and attention to detail.
• A collaborative mindset and genuine interest in learning from attorneys across the firm.
