Running Start Academic Advisors provide academic advising and college navigation support to Running Start students, who are dually enrolled in high school and at Highline College. Running Start Academic Advisors will primarily advise Running Start students within their caseload on course selection based on students' high school graduation requirements, associate degree/certificate requirements, and other academic goals. This includes helping students identify academic interests and goals, co-create academic plans that map out courses which fulfill high school graduation requirements and other academic goals while in the Running Start program, develop skills and strategies for academic success, and navigate other college resources including career exploration, university transfer, and counseling. Academic advising is primarily conducted one-on-one (in-person and virtually), in small groups/workshops, and in classroom settings.
Additionally, Running Start Academic Advisors support Running Start students with college navigation and transitioning to a college environment. This includes helping students understand college policies and expectations, navigate college processes, build soft skills and self-efficacy, and make referrals to departments and resources across campus. Advisors provide navigational support through facilitating presentations (informational sessions for prospective students and families as well as new student orientation sessions for newly enrolled students), one-on-one academic advising appointments, and in small group/workshops. Advisors connect with prospective students and families to provide information regarding the Running Start program through a variety of outreach opportunities.
Running Start is a dual credit program in Washington State that allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college courses for which they earn both high school and college credits. Highline College enrolls more than 1,300 Running Start students annually, which includes more than 70 percent students of color, 50 percent low-income, and 50 percent first-generation college students. At Highline College, the Running Start department is organized within the Student Services division. The department is responsible for administering the Running Start program, which includes enrollment management, outreach, orientation, student advising, Running Start fee waiver, data sharing and state enrollment reporting, additional student support, and program administration.
Regular work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm, with occasional evening and weekend work required. Regular work schedule may vary depending on department needs. This position is on-site as the role primarily provides in-person services. This is a salaried overtime-eligible, at-will, full-time position.
