Accountant - Financial Analysis & Capital Projects

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to support financial analysis and capital project funding for a fast-paced organization. This contract position will focus on reviewing construction project requests, evaluating funding requirements, and determining whether costs should be classified as capital expenditures or operating expenses.

This opportunity is ideal for a candidate with experience in accounting, financial analysis, capital project accounting, or capital expenditure management who enjoys working with financial data, managing multiple priorities, and supporting project funding decisions. The initial assignment is approximately three months to provide maternity leave coverage, with the possibility of extension based on business needs.

Please note: This role is primarily focused on financial analysis and capital project support rather than traditional accounting functions such as accounts payable or journal entries.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and prepare appropriation requests to support funding for construction and infrastructure projects.

• Evaluate incoming project requests to determine eligibility for funding based on established requirements.

• Analyze project costs and determine appropriate classification as capital expenditures (CapEx) or operating expenses (OpEx).

• Review historical spending data to estimate funding needs for monthly and quarterly funding requests.

• Track, prioritize, and manage a high volume of project requests while ensuring deadlines and service expectations are met.

• Maintain daily tracking reports to monitor project status, outstanding requests, and priorities.

• Analyze financial information to support accurate and timely funding decisions.

• Collaborate with team members and internal stakeholders to clarify project details and resolve discrepancies.

• Assist with month-end close activities as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Experience in accounting, financial analysis, project accounting, or a related financial role.

• Understanding of capital expenditures versus operating expenses and basic capitalization principles.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUPs; experience with pivot tables is preferred.

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to review historical data and evaluate financial information.

• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple requests and competing deadlines.

• Exceptional attention to detail when reviewing financial information and project costs.

• Strong communication skills and a willingness to ask questions, collaborate, and learn new processes.

• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

• Ability to work fully onsite five days per week in Rochester, NY, for the duration of the contract.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with capital expenditure (CapEx) management or capital project accounting.

• Exposure to construction project finance, infrastructure projects, or project funding processes.

• Experience in the telecommunications industry or a large corporate environment.
