    Accounting Manager

    Overview

    A nationally recognized labor organization representing transportation professionals across North America is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to oversee its accounting operations and financial reporting functions. This leadership position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting while supporting a complex nonprofit organization that administers Railroad Retirement benefits and employee benefit plans.

    Responsibilities

    • Lead the day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, political action committee accounting, and account reconciliations.
    • Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
    • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
    • Ensure compliance with Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) reporting requirements and employer obligations.
    • Develop, maintain, and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
    • Coordinate annual external audits and support all regulatory reporting requirements.
    • Supervise, mentor, and develop members of the accounting team while promoting cross-training and professional growth.
    • Monitor budgets, expenses, and financial performance, providing meaningful analysis and recommendations to leadership.
    • Utilize accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel to prepare financial reports and perform detailed analysis.
    • Partner with internal departments to improve financial processes and operational efficiency.
    • Prepare and oversee required government and regulatory filings, including Form 5500 and Department of Labor LM-2, LM-3, and LM-4 reports.
    • Support ERISA-related employee benefit plan accounting and regulatory compliance.
    • Perform additional accounting and finance projects as needed.


    Qualifications

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
    • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience.
    • Prior experience supervising or leading accounting staff.
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
    • Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency.
    • Experience with accounting software and financial systems.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.


    Preferred

    • CPA or CMA designation.
    • Experience within a nonprofit organization, labor union, or association.
    • Experience with ERISA benefit plan accounting and Form 5500 reporting.
    • Experience coordinating financial statement audits and regulatory compliance.


    Compensation & Benefits

    • Base salary of $130,000–$140,000
