This is an exciting time to work for Amarillo College! We are seeking our next Adjunct Faculty - Speech/Mass Communications who will be all-in on our mission and who provides instruction for courses in the assigned discipline. Teaching responsibilities may include classroom, technology-supported, and/or online instruction, as well as preparation of course materials and maintaining competence in the subject area being taught. Adjunct faculty support student learning by delivering organized and engaging instruction aligned with approved course outlines and learning outcomes.

The Adjunct Faculty - Speech/Mass Communication is responsible for supporting student success through effective instruction in communication, speech, and/or mass communication coursework. Instruction may include public speaking, interpersonal communication, media writing, journalism, mass communication, and related communication disciplines. Current instructional needs prioritize in-person teaching during standard daytime business hours, with additional teaching opportunities based on enrollment and departmental needs.

This position is filled on an as need basis, contingent upon institutional needs.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Required: Master's Degree in Communication, Mass Communication, Speech, Journalism, Media Studies, or a closely related field, or a Master's Degree with at least eighteen (18) graduate hours in Communication, Mass Communication, Speech, or a related discipline.

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred: Previous postsecondary teaching experience in Speech, Communication, Mass Communication, Journalism, or a related discipline. Experience teaching or supporting coursework in media writing, journalism, public speaking, interpersonal communication, or mass communication, including familiarity with AP Style and media production processes.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned course(s) using effective and engaging instructional methods.
  • Prepare and deliver organized instruction in accordance with approved course outlines and learning outcomes.
  • Provide instruction in speech, communication, public speaking, media writing, journalism, mass communication, and related coursework as assigned.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that promote student engagement and learning.
  • Utilize a course syllabus for each course following established institutional guidelines.
  • Evaluate student learning and provide timely feedback regarding academic progress, presentations, speeches, written assignments, and communication skill development.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and academic performance.
  • Maintain an active instructional presence in classroom and/or online learning environments, including timely communication with students.
  • Meet with students before or after class, by appointment, or through electronic communication to support student success.
  • Submit required college reports, records, rosters, and forms in a timely manner.
  • Participate in meetings, orientations, and training as required.
  • Support course and curriculum development, review, and assessment activities as appropriate.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining an orderly and effective learning environment and the appropriate use of instructional resources and technology.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-centered teaching, learning, and meaningful feedback.
  • Maintaining an active instructional presence in both the classroom and online learning environments.
  • Participate in departmental onboarding, training, and professional development activities related to instructional effectiveness, student engagement, instructional technology, and college policies.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Salary: Amarillo College Pay Grades, please review the TEACHING OVERLOAD COMPENSATION and ADJUNCT FACULTY COMPENSATION chart to view the salary pay scale. This is based on your highest level of education.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to travel between offices and buildings, and requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull and/or maneuver office supplies as needed.

Working Conditions: Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and varying events if necessary.)

Work Environment: This job may operate in a classroom, online, or tech supported setting. This role routinely uses standard classroom and office equipment such as microphones, audio/video-recorders, computers, overhead projectors, phones, copy machines, filing cabinets and fax machines.
