Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the organizational unit is to provide police and security, environmental health and safety, and emergency management services for North Carolina Central University. This unit reports directly to the Asst. Director of Public Safety

Primary Purpose of Position
The operators process incoming calls from the general public and others by forwarding the calls to staff, faculty and departments, or by providing the caller with the requested direct number. The University Campus Switchboard serves as the first level of support for customers of the university telephone system and for other informational services.

The goal of the university telecommunications switchboard operators is to direct callers to the needed destination with the fewest connections along the way. The operators provide current information on faculty, staff, and student (SGA, student organizations, etc.) telephone numbers. They receive an average of 3000+ calls each month. Operators answer a variety of inquiries from local, state, national, and international callers.

The University telephone switchboard operators serve as the front line of service for the university in answering calls that are initiated through the main university phone line (919-530-6100). The operators provide a personal, friendly, and customer-centric response to calls that come into nearly every division and unit throughout the university. They are also responsible for answering general questions that are posed regarding events or activities on the university's campus and transferring all calls to the appropriate point person or department.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of operating switchboard consoles by answering, transferring, and directing incoming local and long-distance calls and referring questions to the proper office or person in a courteous and professional manner; ability to provide friendly and efficient frontline customer service to external and internal customers; ability to communicate clearly; ability to sit for 8 hours; ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Minimum Education/Experience
High School Diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
