Advanced Practice Provider (APP/PA/NP) - Emergency Department

As an Advanced Practice Provider in the Emergency Department, you will care for patients across a broad range of acuity levels with a primary focus on UVA's APP-lead ED Observation Unit. The Role

In this role, you will spend most of your clinical time in the ED Observation Unit, where APPs serve as primary providers managing patients through evidence-based pathways that promote high-quality care while avoiding unnecessary admissions. You will also rotate through the Main ED and Rapid Medical Evaluation areas, gaining exposure to high-acuity emergency medicine, procedural care, and collaborative decision-making in a busy academic environment.

Providers practice alongside emergency medicine residents, fellows, attending physicians, nurses, 24/7 emergency medicine clinical pharmacists, case managers, and consultants in a collaborative academic setting that values teaching, evidenced based care, and continous professional growth.

The schedule includes full-time clinical coverage of 144 hours every four-week period, primarily through 12-hour shifts with one 8-hour shift. The scheduling model supports meaningful PTO flexibility, allowing providers to reduce their clinical requirements and/or redistribute hours within coverage requirements when taking vacation time.

On an average day, you may:

• Perform comprehensive H&Ps, develop treatment plans, write progress notes, complete discharge summaries, and coordinate discharge planning.
• Manage observation pathways such as TIA evaluations, chest pain workups, syncope, pneumonia, pyelonephritis, and other pathway-driven presentations.
• Evaluate adult patients across the full spectrum of Emergency Severity Index acuity levels in a fast-paced academic emergency department.
• Collaborate closely with Emergency Medicine attendings, residents, specialty consulting services, case management, nursing teams, APP colleagues, and Observation Medicine leadership.
• Build procedural confidence through opportunities such as laceration repair, splinting, point-of-care ultrasound, and additional emergency medicine procedures as competency develops.
• Practice in a highly collaborative environment where Observation Medicine is a strongly APP-led service, with attending backup available and increasing responsibility as skills progress.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree.

Experience: Department and unit specific.

Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The pay range for this role is $129,323.00 - $185,265.60 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate''s qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
