About the role
This senior technical role leads the delivery of innovative, AI‑driven agentic and automation solutions that improve efficiency, strengthen decision‑making, and deliver positive outcomes across the council and its services. The postholder will oversee the end‑to‑end design, development, optimisation, and assurance of enterprise‑scale AI agents and automation, with a strong focus on Microsoft Copilot and the Power Platform.
You will act as the technical authority for Copilot and AI automation, making architectural decisions on how solutions integrate with enterprise systems, data sources, and security models. The role involves leading complex discovery and feasibility work for cross‑departmental initiatives, balancing risk, effort, cost, and user needs while working with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities. You will define, maintain, and drive adoption of robust engineering standards covering prompting patterns, testing, evaluation, release, monitoring, and auditability, ensuring solutions are production‑grade and fit for scale.
Alongside hands‑on technical delivery, you will research emerging AI technologies, pilot innovative approaches for council adoption, and contribute to the development of council‑wide AI strategy and governance. You will provide technical leadership, mentoring junior developers, reviewing work, and acting as the senior escalation point for high‑risk, complex, or novel AI and Copilot use cases. The role also includes managing technical relationships with external suppliers and vendors, resolving complex integration and troubleshooting challenges, and setting best practices and quality standards for Copilot development across the organisation.
About the team
You will be part of a specialist AI and automation capability, working closely with the council's AI Centre of Excellence and a wide range of business stakeholders. The team focuses on delivering real, operationally embedded AI solutions rather than experiments, supporting services across the council to work smarter and more effectively. Collaboration, strong technical governance, and a shared commitment to responsible and secure AI adoption sit at the core of how the team operates.

Why join us?
This role offers the opportunity to lead real, production‑grade AI and Microsoft Copilot solutions at scale, not proofs of concept. You will shape how AI is designed, governed, and deployed across a large organisation, delivering Copilot agents that have tangible, organisation‑wide impact. You will have the authority to set technical standards, define architecture direction, and influence strategy, while remaining hands‑on with complex, multi‑system integrations.
We offer meaningful technical challenges, strong support for hybrid working, and the chance to apply AI where it genuinely improves services and how people work. If you want your Power Platform and Copilot expertise to have purpose, scale, and visibility, this role delivers all three.
