Job Description:

Virginia's community colleges have a 50-year track record of educational excellence and innovation to serve the needs of our citizens and strengthen the Commonwealth's economy. When Virginia's General Assembly established the Virginia Community College System in 1966, the need for a comprehensive system was well known. Over the two decades after the end of World War II, leaders in government, business, professional sectors, and academia had called for a new approach to providing educational opportunity. A key concern was Virginia's ability to develop a skilled and knowledgeable workforce to expand the state's economy. Today our community colleges give every Virginian the opportunity to gain a quality education. With 23 colleges on 40 campuses located throughout the state, Virginia's Community Colleges are committed to serving Virginia families, helping them acquire the knowledge and skills to seize the opportunities of today and tomorrow.

The AI Strategy and Implementation Coordinator serves as the system-level coordinator and functional connector for implementation of the VCCS AI Strategic Plan. The position fosters engagement across colleges, aligns initiatives with governance structures and the four strategy pillars, monitors progress and performance measures, and promotes consistent, responsible implementation across the system. The coordinator works cross-functionally with Information Technology, Teaching and Learning, Workforce, Student Support, Institutional Research, College AI Leads, and Communities of Practice to advance AI use cases, policy, education, workforce integration, communications, training resources, the AI Playbook, and vendor coordination activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

KSA's Required:

  • Understanding of AI tools and applications in higher education, including instructional, operational, student-support, and workforce-aligned use cases.
  • Knowledge of governance processes, responsible technology implementation, change management, and cross-functional facilitation.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, organization, and stakeholder-engagement skills across faculty, staff, college leaders, governance bodies, and executive leadership.
  • Ability to synthesize complex policy, technology, and implementation information into accessible and actionable guidance.
  • Skill in project tracking, data interpretation, progress reporting, strategic communication, and management of multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to ethical, safe, responsible, and student-centered digital innovation.
  • Proficiency with standard project and communication tools, including Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint, and Excel.

Education and Experience Required:

A combination of relevant education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the position's functions successfully. Demonstrated experience leading or coordinating large-scale or systemwide technology, academic, workforce, digital-transformation, or strategic implementation initiatives.

Additional Considerations:

  • Familiarity with AI policy, risk frameworks, ethical AI principles, and emerging technology trends.
  • Experience supporting Communities of Practice, faculty learning communities, professional development, or systemwide communications.
  • Knowledge of community college, multi-institution, or statewide higher education environments.
  • Experience working in or with a community college system or another multi-institution educational environment. Prior experience with AI governance, digital strategy implementation, innovation programs, stakeholder engagement, professional development, or strategic communications at a system or statewide level.
