Under the direction of the nurse manager and supervision of the professional nurse, provides supportive care to the Ambulatory Infusion Center and Cancer Resource Center by performing a variety of clerical and patient care duties.
Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or equivalent.
Current license as a Laboratory Assistant through the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services at time of hire or position entry; or qualify to apply for license as a Laboratory Assistant through the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services within six (6) months of hire or position entry
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers
Preferred
Documentation of successful completion of a course or training in phlebotomy
Previous experience with specimen processing
One (1) year's previous experience as a medical assistant. Experience in healthcare may be substituted.
Essential Functions
Handle incoming and outbound calls to schedule patients in appropriate time blocks.
Verifying orders and/or referrals are present when required to schedule an appointment.
Works with provider offices and other departments within Carson Tahoe Health to validate orders or referrals for appointment scheduling accuracy.
Interview and pre-register patients in a prompt, accurate, professional, and confidential manner. Verify all information is accurate and complete.
Collect proper insurance information and secure benefit coverage to promote prompt payment from insurances.
Under the direction of a registered nurse, identify any deviations from norms and reports and documents findings in a timely and appropriate manner.
Works closely with Pre-Access team and operations to communicate schedule changes, cancellations, and STAT requests.
Greet and accompany patients to appropriate nursing area, provide patients with beverages and snacks.
Ambulation of patients, as necessary, to restroom, physician's office, or patient's vehicle.
Obtain patient data collection, including vital signs - blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature (oral, axillary, rectal), pulse ox, CMS, height, and weight.
Maintain and prepare chairs between patients and procedures.
Phlebotomy: performs phlebotomies with minimum discomfort and accurate instruction to patient, collects the appropriate specimen and amount for ordered tests, correctly labels specimen, and accurately collects STATS or Timed tests.
Specimen collection/handling, including respiratory secretions, throat culture, stool, and urine samples.
Collect data related to health status by collecting, reporting, and recording basic objective and subjective data at the direction and under the supervision of RN.
Provide supplemental oxygen by applying approved devices (nasal cannula, or simple oxygen mask)
Telephone 911 and perform basic CPR during an emergency while waiting for Emergency Services arrival.
Assists and performs special tasks as requested by medical or nursing staff, including observation and isolation patient care, following established protocols.
Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
Courier patient samples to and from the Regional Medical Center.
Assists with computer order entry, telephone reception, and completion of daily log promptly.
Assists in obtaining labs from outside facilities, notifying nursing staff, documenting, and filing lab reports.
Orders supplies. Verifies accuracy of orders by matching items on delivery slip to items received. Orders dietary supplies as requested and verifies accuracy of deliveries.
Demonstrates basic computer skills.
Maintains working knowledge of downtime procedures. Performs downtime procedures with little or no assistance.
Acts as a mentor for new employees as they develop their skills & competencies related to daily job functions.
Ability to handle equipment malfunctions, applying troubleshooting techniques.
Demonstrates the ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Required to analyze and problem solve in emergent situations.
Required to regularly interact with internal and external customers.
Required to handle routine workflow with a minimum of supervision.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
