School Of Medicine Department Anesthesiology

Chief Purpose of Position

To provide medical and/or surgical care and treatment to patients with chronic pains as designated by the Anesthesiology Department Chairman and Medical Director.

Program director for Chronic Pain. Provides diagnostic therapeutic and/or preventive healthcare service including any or all of the following:

  • Histories and physicals
  • Order and interpret tests
  • Make preliminary diagnosis
  • Treat injuries/illness
  • Assist surgical procedures
  • Counselling patients and/or prescribe medication
  • Those invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine and designated by Medical Director

Works collaboratively with the medical team to deliver organized, timely, cost-effective, and quality patient care. May supervise support staff and trainees including medical students, residents, and pain fellows.

The Chronic Pain Physician will provide patient care under defined departmental and state-approved scope of practice.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current VA license as a Physician by the Virginia Board of Medicine
  • Active DEA license
  • CPR and Basic Life Support BLS certifications
  • MD degree
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support ACLS certifications where needed
  • Credentialing in accordance with medical staff by-laws for specific job title

Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certification in Pain Management
  • Three years of previous clinical pain management experience
  • Addiction/Substance Abuse clinical experience
