JOB TITLE: ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER

JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Administrator of the Jackson Animal Care Center. Perform routine and complex public safety work in the enforcement of animal control ordinances.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Patrol streets to locate stray animals and promptly capture animals and transport them to an animal shelter.
- Respond to complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinances, including but not limited to animals running at large, cruelty and neglect situations, bites, property damage, or injuries.
- Remove injured or dangerous animals from streets, residential and other premises.
- Compile data regarding animal control; prepare daily, monthly, and annual reports of activities.
- Investigate violations of animal control ordinances and issue warnings or citations as required; compile evidence packets for court, appear in court to testify regarding animal control cases.
- Work as a team with fellow Officers and shelter staff to provide the highest level of service to the community while acting in a humane, compassionate and professional manner and upholding best industry practices.
- Serve criminal or civil notices or papers related to enforcement of animal control ordinances.
- Coordinate and appear with the public relations program designed by the
- Supervisor in order to foster public awareness of ordinances regarding animal control and humane treatment of animals; work closely with the media, youth programs, public interest groups and businesses to promote improved care and control of animals.
- Work an assigned shift using own judgement in deciding course of action to handle difficult and emergency situations without on-site assistance.
- Maintain normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies, dispatch of calls or precedent.
- Carry out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City Laws and ordinances.
- Maintain contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, to provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and to provide general information about Department activities.
- Assist shelter personnel with various tasks.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
- Vehicle, animal capture equipment, two-way radio, side handle baton, pepper spray, cell phone, first aid equipment.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid Driver's License
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Some knowledge of enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; working knowledge of animal restraint and care techniques;
- Some skill in operating the tools and equipment listed above;
- Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations;
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and the public;
- Ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and in making decisions;
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
- Ability to learn the City's geography.
- Ability to evaluate potential threats by potentially aggressive animals and/or humans and respond appropriately.
