School Counselor

Reports To: Principal

Qualifications: New Jersey School Counselor Certificate

Supervises: NA

Basic Functions: To provide support, direction and guidance to students through individual, small group counseling services, and whole class instruction including appropriate involvement with teachers, parents and administrators.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES - INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: A. Assists students in developing self-understanding, decision making and planning skills, and personal development through individual and group counseling.

B. Delivers the character education program and guidance curriculum as defined by the Board of Education.

C. Provides information and consultation services to teachers, parents and administrators, and acts as a resource for age-related issues.

D. Assists the professional staff in the creation of an effective schedule reflecting appropriate placement and consideration of student needs.

E. Assists the professional staff and administration in monitoring student progress through a review of grades, test results and other indicators of student achievement and through serving on Intervention and Referral Services Committee.

F. In conjunction with administrators, maintains thorough and comprehensive records.

G. Assists with and coordinates orientation programs and other transition activities for placement at the next level.

H. Provides information on out of school activities/opportunities for students and acts as community liaison with the school.

I. Assists the Child Study Team with referrals for placement.

J. Assists in the administration of the standardized testing program.

K. Serves as 504-ADA co-coordinator in each school.

L. Performs all other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal or other administrators in the district.

M. Conduct or complete all facets of the Suicide Assessment Risk Analysis in accordance with district procedures.

Employment will be dependent on successful completion of a criminal background check as mandated by N.J.S.A. 18A:6-7.1. Additionally, and in compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Permanent teaching staff members are further required to meet the citizenship standards set forth in N.J.S.A. 18A:26-1.
