Build the quality engineering capability behind digital healthcare experiences.
We are seeking a software engineer who is passionate about quality, automation, and creating systems that help teams deliver with confidence. In this role, you will design and own scalable test automation for patient-facing web and mobile applications, APIs, Epic integrations, and other digital experiences. You will work as an embedded engineering partner, writing production-quality test code, shaping testability, and integrating fast, reliable quality signals into Azure DevOps pipelines. This is an opportunity to establish a modern quality engineering practice, influence how software is designed and released, and see your work improve the reliability of digital experiences used in healthcare.
You will have the opportunity to build more than individual test scripts. You will shape a reusable quality engineering capability that supports multiple teams, improves release confidence, and creates more time for engineers to deliver valuable features. The role offers meaningful technical ownership, close partnership with experienced application and platform teams, and the chance to apply modern automation and AI-assisted engineering practices to consequential healthcare technology.
This is a remote position but you must reside in Colorado. Candidates will be considered for one of the following levels: Application Developer (3+ years of relevant experience, $39.64 - $59.46 / hour) or Application Developer Senior (5+ years of relevant experience, $48.56- $72.84 / hour).
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain reusable automated testing frameworks for responsive web applications, native and hybrid mobile experiences, REST APIs, and integrated end-to-end workflows.
- Create stable, readable, and maintainable automated tests using modern tools such as Playwright for browser and API testing and Appium or native frameworks for iOS and Android testing.
- Integrate automated tests, quality gates, results, and diagnostic artifacts into Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines so teams receive actionable feedback early in the development lifecycle.
- Partner with developers, analysts, product owners, architects, and IT testing resources to translate requirements and business risk into effective test strategies and prioritized automation coverage.
- Build automation for critical patient and employee workflows, including authentication, session management, deep links, push notifications, device and operating-system variations, and third-party integrations.
- Develop API and integration tests for Epic EHR, FHIR, web services, in-house APIs, and other external systems; validate both expected behavior and resilient failure handling.
- Improve application testability by contributing code, test hooks, utilities, test data strategies, mocks, service virtualization, and environment configuration in partnership with feature teams.
- Investigate failed tests and software defects using logs, traces, telemetry, network data, and debugging tools; distinguish product defects from test, data, and environment issues.
- Monitor and improve automation health by reducing flaky tests, optimizing execution time, strengthening diagnostics, and retiring low-value or redundant tests.
- Establish practical quality metrics and baselines, including automated coverage of high-risk workflows, regression execution time, defect detection timing, escaped defects, and manual effort reduced.
- Contribute to code reviews, coding standards, documentation, and shared engineering practices. Coach developers and testers on effective automation, test design, and quality ownership.
- Use AI-assisted development and testing tools responsibly to accelerate test design, code creation, documentation, and analysis while validating accuracy, maintainability, security, and alignment with business requirements.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years of software development or test automation engineering experience with regular hands-on coding responsibilities.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language used for automation, such as C#, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, Swift, or Kotlin, with the ability to produce clean, maintainable, reviewable code.
- Experience designing or extending automated test frameworks for web, mobile, API, integration, or end-to-end testing.
- Hands-on experience with one or more modern automation tools such as Playwright, Appium, Selenium, XCUITest, Espresso, REST-assured, or comparable frameworks.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and working with source control, pull requests, branching strategies, and Git-based development workflows.
- Knowledge of test design techniques, risk-based testing, regression strategy, test data management, environment dependencies, and the appropriate balance of unit, API, integration, UI, and exploratory testing.
- Experience testing REST-based services and validating requests, responses, authentication, data contracts, error handling, and downstream effects. SOAP experience is beneficial.
- Proficiency troubleshooting complex failures using logs, telemetry, browser and mobile diagnostics, network traces, SQL queries, and debugging tools.
- Understanding of secure software development, privacy-conscious test data practices, and accessibility and performance considerations for digital applications.
- Ability to work within Agile delivery practices using Azure DevOps or a comparable platform for backlog, test, pipeline, and defect management.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with Playwright and TypeScript or C# for cross-browser UI and API automation.
- Experience with Appium and native mobile automation for iOS and Android, including simulators, emulators, and physical devices.
- Experience testing applications built with ASP.NET Core, JavaScript/TypeScript, REST APIs, Microsoft SQL Server, and Microsoft Azure.
- Experience with visual regression, accessibility automation, performance testing, contract testing, service virtualization, containerized test execution, or cloud device farms.
- Experience with Epic MyChart, FHIR, healthcare integrations, patient portals, or regulated digital products. Healthcare experience is beneficial but not required.
- Experience establishing an automation capability, modernizing an existing test suite, or mentoring others in quality engineering practices.
Core Competencies:
- Engineering mindset: approaches test automation as maintainable software and makes pragmatic decisions about where automation provides the greatest value.
- Quality leadership without gatekeeping: builds strong partnerships and helps the whole team own quality rather than treating testing as a final handoff.
- Customer and patient focus: understands that reliability, usability, accessibility, privacy, and clear failure behavior matter in every digital interaction.
- Systems thinking: connects behavior across user interfaces, mobile platforms, APIs, data, environments, pipelines, and third-party integrations.
- Curiosity and disciplined problem solving: asks effective questions, identifies ambiguity, investigates evidence, and follows issues through to root cause.
- Clear communication: explains technical risks and quality signals to technical and non-technical partners and creates documentation others can use.
- Bias for measurable outcomes: prioritizes high-risk scenarios, tracks whether automation is improving delivery, and continuously adjusts the approach.
- Adaptability and continuous learning: evaluates new tools thoughtfully and learns unfamiliar technologies while maintaining stable engineering standards.
- Ownership and accountability: follows through on commitments, raises risks early, and remains accountable for the usefulness and reliability of the automation capability.
