Qualifications:
MA/MS Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field with minimum additional experience of 1 year(s) in full-time professional experience or equivalent
- Substantial practical and technical knowledge of the methods, procedures, and technology of archaeology, and the skill to apply that knowledge in order to solve practical problems with a wide range of functions. Perform a variety of technical duties (e.g., archaeological monitoring; field surveys; specimen recovery, evaluations, and identification; research, etc.)Skill in using basic tools and equipment common to archaeological functions (e.g., GPS unit, topographic maps, archaeological survey and monitoring tools). GIS data collection and mapping.

Duties:
Serves as an Archaeologist in the Resource Management Division of El Malpais and El Morro National Monuments. Primary responsibilities include monitoring of construction or trail projects, field surveys, recording sites, conducting artifact analysis, conducting condition assessments, and other archaeological-related work as needed.
- Serves as the Archaeological Monitor on construction projects, specifically for the El Calderon Trail and Accessibility project anticipated to occur from 2/2026 ? 06/2026. Scheduling the monitoring for this project will need to be flexible as it will be most important for the Arch Monitor to be on-site during ground-disturbing activities and the schedule will be dependent on the Contractor?s schedule and progress with work. Reviews preliminary design, construction documents, and compliance package (i.e. cultural resources specific-mitigation measures) to understand project work and stipulations. Attends construction meetings/briefings as necessary. Halts work in the area of discovery if previously undiscovered archaeological resources, inadvertent discoveries, or human remains are unearthed; and notifies the Monument?s Superintendent and Environmental Protection Specialist. Communicates to the ELMA COR and ELMAO Section 106 Coordinator / CR Branch Manager of any concerns or issues that need to be addressed. 90%
- Conducts archaeological field surveys searching for archaeological features and artifacts. Records data and prepares survey records (e.g., site maps, photographs, surface artifact analysis forms, field notes, etc.). Evaluates specimens. Processes specimens recovered in the field (as appropriate) ? identifies, labels, and packages artifacts for curation. 5%
- Conducts condition assessments of archaeological sites (including petroglyphs), as necessary. 5%

- Required Certifications: Must meet the Secretary of Interior?s Professional Qualifications for Archaeology
- Overnight travel: Depending on enrollee location, occasional overnight trips may be required
- Required Safety Gear: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for monitoring construction / project implementation activities.
- Physical requirements: Ability to navigate construction site during the spring, summer and fall months. The trail is one mile long and may need to be walked the entire distance and back daily. Terrain is relatively flat with some undulations. Heavy items (e.g., packs up to 50 pounds) may need to be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Repetitive motions of bending, crouching, prolonged standing are often required. Heavy construction equipment will be used during the El Calderon Trail Accessibility project and it will be noisy at times. Some work (e.g., survey, conducting condition assessments, etc.) may be performed in more isolated areas; therefore, it?s important that the enrollee be familiar with outdoor safety.
