    Job Title Aseptic Processing and Biotechnology Instructor Job Description

    The Aseptic Processing and Biotechnology Instructor is a full-time, 12-month instructional staff position located on the Old Charlotte Highway OCH Campus in Monroe, NC. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Aseptic & Biotechnology Training Programs, the Instructor provides direct instruction in biotechnology, BioWork, and related workforce training programs.

    Instruction emphasizes applied biology, chemistry, and microbiology within biomanufacturing processes. The instructor also supports workforce initiatives, industry partnerships, and grant-funded programming in alignment with SPCC and regional economic development goals.

    Essential Duties Summary

    Curriculum and Teaching

    • Teach assigned biotechnology and workforce training instructional loads which may vary per semester (including BioWork and other related continuing education or customized training programs) through classroom, laboratory, and/or hybrid delivery methods.
    • Facilitate student learning of instructional loads of 26-30 weekly contact hours in Aseptic and Biotechnology, BioWork, and related continuing education and customized training programs.
    • Prepare instructional materials, and laboratory exercises aligned with biotechnology and workforce training curriculum outcomes.
    • Facilitate student learning using competency-based, student-centered, and applied instructional strategies appropriate to workforce and academic settings.
    • Evaluate and assess student learning using program-approved assessments; maintain accurate records of grades, attendance, and student progress.
    • Maintain and update course materials, course outlines, and instructional resources to ensure currency with industry standards and emerging biotechnology practices.
    • Ensure a safe, organized, and effective learning environment in both classroom and laboratory settings, including adherence to applicable safety and regulatory guidelines.
    • Instructional staff maintain a 40-hr workweek over five days, on campus or at an assigned work site, encompassing instruction, service to the College, and professional development. On-site hours may be adjusted for distance education responsibilities and approved telework arrangements.

    Program Leadership and Coordination

    • Assist in the implementation of biotechnology and workforce training courses.
    • Support recruitment, orientation, mentoring of adjunct instructional staff.
    • Maintain program documentation, program syllabi, and course shells in alignment with SPCC standards and workforce training requirements.
    • Participate in program review, assessment of student learning outcomes, and continuous improvement planning to ensure alignment with industry standards and workforce needs.

    Industry Engagement and Workforce Alignment

    • Develop and maintain partnerships with regional biomanufacturing and life sciences employers to support workforce alignment.
    • Assist in identifying workforce needs and aligning program offerings accordingly.
    • Monitor industry trends and emerging practices to ensure curriculum relevance.
    • Support program promotion, recruitment, and community engagement activities.

    Student Support and Success

    • Promote student success through engagement, advising, and individualized academic support.
    • Provide timely, constructive feedback and maintain accessibility to students in support of their academic and professional development.
    • Participate in student recruitment, admissions, advising, retention, and completion initiatives to support program growth and student achievement.

    Institutional and Professional Expectations

    • Actively participate in program, division, and college meetings, committees, and activities.
    • Engage in continuous professional development to maintain instructional and industry expertise.

    • Accept teaching assignments based on program needs, including day, evening, weekend, or off-site instruction.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Working Conditions

    • Work is performed in classroom, laboratory, cleanroom simulation, and workforce training environments.
    • Requires standing, walking, and demonstrating laboratory procedures for extended periods, as well as the operation of laboratory and instructional equipment.
    • Exposure to laboratory materials and equipment may occur; all work must be conducted in accordance with applicable safety protocols, institutional policies, and regulatory requirements.

    Required Qualifications

    • Associate's degree in biotechnology or a related field and two years of related industry work experience.

    OR

    • Ten years of experience in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry with industry recognized credentials in the field.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology, or a closely related Life Science field.
    • Industry training experience applying principles of biology, chemistry, or microbiology in biomanufacturing, quality assurance/control, or laboratory environments.
    • Three years of experience with hands-on laboratory or cleanroom instruction, including microbiological and/or chemical techniques such as aseptic processing and environmental monitoring.
    • Teaching experience in a community college or university setting.
    • BioWork Certificate graduate or experience as BioWork instructor.
    • Experience using a learning management system (e.g., Canvas). Upon hire, the instructional staff must successfully complete required LMS training or provide documentation of prior experience.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
