Position Summary

The Asset Maintenance Technician supports Southern Ice Cream's field operations by delivering and retrieving company-owned equipment (including freezers and related assets), performing on-site minor repairs and adjustments, and completing basic shop/facility and vehicle preventive maintenance to keep assets and fleet equipment safe, reliable, clean, and customer-ready. This role blends light mechanical service, asset handling, and logistics coordination while maintaining high standards for safety, food safety, and customer service.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Equipment Delivery, Pick-Ups & Asset Handling

  • Deliver, set up, and place company equipment (e.g., display/freezer units and related accessories) at customer locations following route schedules and installation standards.
  • Pick up equipment from customer sites, confirm condition, and transport safely back to the warehouse/shop.
  • Load/unload equipment using safe lifting practices and material handling tools (dollies, pallet jacks, lift gates, straps).
  • Use Samsara (or similar fleet/telematics platform) for route visibility, vehicle compliance, driver performance, and communication as assigned.
  • Complete delivery/pick-up documentation (asset tags/serials, condition notes, photos as needed) and obtain customer signatures when required.
  • Coordinate with Sales/Operations on delivery windows, site access, and special requirements.

On-Site Small Repairs & Service (Customer Locations)

  • Perform minor, non-invasive on-site repairs and adjustments to keep assets operational, such as:
    • Replacing gaskets, hinges, handles, casters, shelves/baskets, lights, and power cords (where permitted).
    • Cleaning/clearing condenser areas and vents (as allowed), basic defrost and door-seal checks.
    • Tightening hardware, leveling units, adjusting doors, and verifying safe electrical connections.
  • Diagnose common issues and determine when escalation is needed (e.g., sealed-system refrigeration problems, electrical hazards).
  • Communicate repair status, limitations, and next steps clearly to customers and internal teams.

Preventive Maintenance (Equipment Assets)

  • Perform preventive maintenance on company equipment to reduce downtime and extend asset life, including:
    • Routine inspections, cleaning, and functional checks prior to redeployment.
    • Basic part replacements (gaskets, casters, bulbs, handles, cords) and minor adjustments.
    • Maintaining PM checklists and documenting findings, corrective actions, and parts used.
  • Tag/track equipment status (ready, needs repair, out of service) and communicate priorities to Operations.

Minor Vehicle Preventive Maintenance & Upkeep (Fleet Support)

  • Perform minor preventive maintenance and readiness checks on company vehicles and report issues promptly, including:
    • Pre/post-trip inspections (tires, lights, wipers, fluid levels, mirrors, safety equipment).
    • Checking and topping off fluids as appropriate (washer fluid, coolant, etc. per policy).
    • Replacing wiper blades, light bulbs, fuses, and other simple wear items (as authorized).
    • Maintaining vehicle cleanliness (cab and cargo area) and ensuring required supplies are stocked (straps, blankets, cones, etc.).
    • Coordinating scheduled services (oil changes, inspections) and escalating mechanical concerns to approved vendors/management.
  • Use Samsara and internal forms to document inspections, maintenance notes, and vehicle issues.

Shop/Facility Asset Maintenance

  • Inspect, clean, and stage equipment for redeployment; verify asset tags, appearance, and basic function checks.
  • Maintain an organized shop area, tools, and parts inventory; restock common "field kit" components.
  • Maintain accurate equipment records and basic reporting using Microsoft Excel (asset lists, delivery logs, service history, parts usage, and simple summaries).
  • Support basic facility maintenance as needed (lighting, doors, minor plumbing, general repairs).

Safety, Compliance & Customer Service

  • Follow all safety requirements including safe driving practices, lifting ergonomics, PPE use, and hazard reporting.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitary handling practices appropriate for food-related environments (no contamination risk; clean equipment presentation).
  • Treat customers professionally on-site; represent Southern Ice Cream with a service-first mindset.
  • Use work orders/CMMS or company forms to document deliveries, service notes, parts used, inspections, and outcomes.

  • Ability to safely operate a forklift and powered pallet jack (walkie rider/electric pallet jack); certification required or ability to obtain within a defined onboarding period.
  • Experience with deliveries, installation, field service, maintenance, or related hands-on work (1+ years preferred; will train the right candidate).
  • Comfort using hand tools and performing minor mechanical repairs.
  • Basic proficiency with technology, including Samsara (or similar) for routing/telematics and Microsoft Excel for tracking and reporting.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs with assistance/tools; frequent loading/unloading and moving equipment.
  • Strong communication skills, customer-service mindset, and dependable time management.

Preferred

  • Experience handling commercial freezers/refrigerated display equipment (asset delivery, staging, setup).
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting (cords, plugs, switches) and mechanical aptitude (door/hinge hardware).
  • Familiarity with asset tracking (serial numbers, tags), route management, or CMMS/work orders.
  • DOT medical card (if required for vehicle type/weight), or ability to obtain.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Safe driving and job-site awareness; ability to navigate customer facilities and loading areas.
  • Working knowledge of Samsara for daily route execution, driver compliance, inspections, and basic reporting/communication.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel for maintaining logs, sorting/filtering, and accurate data entry.
  • Basic troubleshooting and repair judgment-knowing when to fix, when to escalate.
  • Organized documentation and asset tracking accuracy.
  • Customer-facing professionalism; calm problem-solving under time pressure.

Working Conditions
