    Job Summary

    The Assistant Conservator is responsible for the examination, documentation, and treatment of significant textile artworks, including historic Savonnerie carpets, within a gallery setting. This role supports conservation efforts for a major exhibition and ongoing collection care initiatives. The position requires adherence to professional conservation standards while performing treatment work in a public-facing environment.

    This is a term-limited position with a duration of one year from the date of hire.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Perform conservation treatment of designated carpets in accordance with established ethical and professional standards

    • Conduct examination, condition reporting, and detailed documentation using appropriate conservation equipment and imaging tools

    • Carry out treatment work in a public gallery space during open hours while adhering to institutional protocols

    • Collaborate closely with the supervising textile conservator regarding treatment plans, installation preparation, and storage needs

    • Participate in exhibition installation alongside conservators, technicians, and art handlers

    • Perform preventive conservation measures, including routine vacuuming and monitoring

    • Safely handle, roll, unroll, and reposition large textile works as part of treatment and installation

    • Maintain conservation tools, supplies, and workspace to ensure safe and effective operations

    • Perform additional related duties as assigned

    Requirements & Qualifications

    Education:
    Masters degree from a recognized Textile Conservation program

    Experience:

    • Minimum two (2) years of experience handling textiles and performing conservation or restoration treatments

    • Experience or strong understanding of carpet weaving techniques highly recommended

    Skills & Abilities:

    • Strong manual dexterity and hand skills required for detailed conservation treatments

    • Excellent examination and analytical skills with knowledge of conservation methodologies

    • Basic photography skills and proficiency with imaging software for documentation

    • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

    • Physical ability to kneel, bend, lift, and perform treatment work on the floor

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment

    • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback professionally
