Assistant Controller

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our accounting team. This is a hands-on role for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys being deeply involved in the day-to-day accounting operations while also supporting strategic financial reporting and compliance activities. The Assistant Controller will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, managing the close process, supporting audits and tax filings, strengthening internal controls, and driving process improvements across the accounting function.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working "in the weeds," thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is willing to roll up their sleeves to ensure accuracy and efficiency throughout all accounting processes.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Accounting Operations

  • Manage daily and monthly customer invoicing processes while ensuring accuracy and timely billing.
  • Review and maintain the general ledger, ensuring all financial transactions are properly recorded and classified.
  • Maintain an accurate chart of accounts and support ongoing accounting system integrity.
  • Assist with company credit card administration, expense report review, and reimbursement processing.
  • Support cash management activities, account analysis, and routine accounting transactions.

Month-End and Financial Reporting

  • Take an active role in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
  • Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations and investigate variances.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Support accrual calculations, journal entries, and account analyses.
  • Ensure compliance with company accounting policies and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Compliance and Controls

  • Manage sales tax reporting, filings, and compliance requirements.
  • Assist with annual audits and tax preparation activities, including responding to auditor and tax advisor requests.
  • Support the development, documentation, and maintenance of internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and reporting requirements.

Fixed Assets and Leasing

  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Manage capital lease accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Track asset additions, disposals, and transfers while ensuring proper accounting treatment.

Process Improvement and Automation

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and workflows.
  • Leverage technology and automation tools to streamline reconciliations, reporting, and data management.
  • Assist with ERP system enhancements, reporting improvements, and implementation of best practices.
  • Develop scalable procedures that improve efficiency while maintaining accuracy and control.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Partner with operational departments to support accounting and financial reporting needs.
  • Provide support for special projects, analyses, and ad hoc reporting requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification preferred.

Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong background in general ledger accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting audits and tax compliance activities.
  • Demonstrated success working in a hands-on accounting role with increasing responsibility.

Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial analysis functions.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and internal controls.
