Job Title: Assistant Controller (Government Contracting)Location: Tysons Corner, VA (Hybrid - 3 days a week)

Position Overview
The Assistant Controller plays a critical operational role in managing day-to-day general ledger accounting, project accounting, and financial reporting while ensuring strict compliance with federal acquisition regulations and government accounting standards. This role is responsible for maintaining audit readiness, overseeing the monthly close, forecasting, managing indirect rate pools, and maintaining robust internal controls across direct, indirect, and sub-recipient costs.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to ensure accurate, timely GAAP-compliant financial statements.
- Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations, complex journal entries, and revenue recognition under ASC 606 across various contract types (CPFF, FFP, T&M, Hybrid).
- Manage daily accounting functions, including oversight of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable/Billing, Payroll, and General Ledger staff.
- Maintain and monitor the structure for direct vs. indirect costs and unallowable expense tracking under FAR 31 / CAS rules.
- Calculate, monitor, and reconcile monthly provisional vs. actual indirect rates (Fringe, Overhead, G&A).
- Lead the annual preparation for Incurred Cost Proposal
- Support government audit readiness, serving as a key point of contact for DCAA, DCMA, external CPA firms, and agency-specific audits.
- Review project setup in Costpoint to ensure alignment with contract delivery terms and funding caps (FAR 52.232-20 / 52.232-22).
- Ensure accurate billing submissions (e.g., WAWF / PIEE, IPP) and track unbilled receivables/ revenue variances.
- Collaborate with Program Managers and Contracts teams on project burn rates, EAC/ETC updates, and subcontractor funding authorizations.
- Maintain, update, and operationalize financial Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and internal control framework to safeguard corporate assets.
- Drive process improvement initiatives to streamline accounting workflows, shorten the monthly close cycle, and enhance system automation.
- Update monthly forecast in Costpoint Planning and meet monthly with Portfolio Managers and Leads to ensure accurate forecasts are completed, develop and execute annual forecast for company
Required QualificationsEducation & Credentials- Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (Master’s or MBA preferred).
- Certifications: CPA preferred
Experience & Technical Knowledge- 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3+ years specifically within the federal government contracting industry.
- Proven proficiency with government contracting accounting systems Deltek Costpoint
- Strong working knowledge of standard federal cost accounting principles:
- FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation) & CAS (Cost Accounting Standards)
- Proper handling of allowable vs. unallowable costs
- Indirect rate pool structures and cost allocation methodologies
- ASC 606 revenue recognition for government contract types
- Experience supporting DCAA/DCMA audits and preparing annual Incurred Cost Submissions.
Core Competencies- Strong leadership skills with experience managing, reviewing, and coaching accounting staff.
- Excellent cross-functional communication skills to partner effectively with Contracts, Program Management, HR, and Executive leadership.
- High analytical aptitude and advanced Microsoft Excel skills (data modeling, pivot tables, advanced formulas).
Compensation:
The expected compensation range for this position is $70,000 - $120,000 annually. Compensation is determined in good faith and may vary based on job-related factors, including relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, clearance level, labor category alignment, contract requirements, work location, internal equity, and business needs.
