    Company Overview

Stoneco of Michigan, part of Michigan Paving and Materials Company and CRH, supplies construction aggregates in Michigan. The company is committed to safe operations, quality, operational excellence, responsible resource development, and environmental stewardship.

    Position Overview

The Assistant Operations Manager is a cross-functional leader responsible for supporting aggregate operations across an assigned geographic area while assisting with mine planning, reserve management, permitting, regulatory compliance, and long-range property development initiatives. This position partners closely with Area Managers, Plant Superintendents, technical teams, environmental professionals, consultants, and regulatory agencies to ensure operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with company objectives.

The role serves as a critical link between day-to-day operational activities and long-term resource planning. By translating life-of-mine plans, permitting requirements, and reserve development strategies into practical operating plans, the Assistant Operations Manager helps maximize operational performance while supporting the responsible development and stewardship of aggregate reserves.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

    Operations and Area Manager Support

    • Assist Area Managers and Plant Superintendents with operational planning, coordination, and execution across assigned aggregate facilities.
    • Support production planning, budgeting, inventory management, quality objectives, equipment utilization, and capital planning efforts.
    • Analyze production, financial, and operational data to identify opportunities for improved efficiency, cost control, reserve recovery, and asset utilization.
    • Partner with site leadership to address operational challenges and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Coordinate activities among operations, quality, environmental, engineering, maintenance, equipment, and finance teams to achieve business objectives.
    • Provide field leadership and operational support at multiple locations as business needs require.

    Mine Planning and Reserve Management

    • Assist in the development and maintenance of short-term and long-term mine plans for aggregate operations.
    • Translate reserve information and life-of-mine planning data into practical annual and multi-year operating plans.
    • Support reserve evaluations, excavation planning, mining elevations, extraction sequencing, overburden stripping, and material movement activities.
    • Prepare and maintain operating maps, mine planning documents, and related technical records.
    • Coordinate mine sequencing activities with plant operations, equipment deployment, processing requirements, haul roads, conveyor systems, and future capital needs.
    • Incorporate drilling results, geological information, hydrology data, property boundaries, setback requirements, environmental constraints, and permit conditions into mine planning activities.
    • Support evaluations of existing reserves, property expansion opportunities, acquisitions, and future aggregate resource development.
    • Maintain planning records and assumptions that support operational continuity and long-term reserve stewardship.

Permitting, Regulatory Compliance, and Agency Coordination

    • Assist with obtaining and maintaining mineral extraction permits, special land use approvals, site-plan reviews, and operating authorizations.
    • Coordinate with consultants, engineers, municipalities, and regulatory agencies to prepare permit applications and supporting technical documentation.
    • Interpret permit conditions, zoning ordinances, property restrictions, and regulatory requirements and incorporate them into operational planning.
    • Support environmental compliance activities related to stormwater, air quality, groundwater, erosion and sedimentation control, and other site-specific requirements.
    • Track permit commitments and ensure requirements are reflected within operating plans, mine maps, reclamation plans, and field activities.
    • Assist with site planning efforts involving buffers, berms, screening, access roads, haul routes, dust control, drainage, and neighboring land uses.
    • Coordinate updates to plans and documentation when permits, reserves, property interests, operational needs, or regulatory requirements change.

    Long-Term Property and Reclamation Planning

    • Support long-range planning efforts for aggregate properties from exploration and permitting through extraction and final reclamation.
    • Evaluate how reserves, property boundaries, infrastructure, environmental constraints, and equipment requirements impact the operational and economic use of aggregate resources.
    • Assist with property evaluations, expansion projects, and reserve development opportunities by coordinating geological, environmental, permitting, and operational information.
    • Identify future operational and capital requirements associated with mine progression and communicate findings to operations leadership.
    • Coordinate progressive reclamation planning and support compliance with approved reclamation requirements.
    • Maintain alignment between strategic life-of-mine plans and field execution activities.

    Safety, Compliance, and Documentation

    • Promote a culture where safety is the highest priority and support all company safety initiatives.
    • Ensure compliance with company policies, permit conditions, and applicable governmental regulations.
    • Assist operations leadership in verifying that operational activities remain consistent with approved mine plans and permit requirements.
    • Maintain organized records related to mine planning, permitting, properties, environmental programs, exploration activities, and operational documentation.
    • Support audits, inspections, agency inquiries, corrective action plans, and public processes as required.
    • Protect confidential and proprietary company information related to reserves, property interests, permitting, and operations.

    Leadership and Collaboration

    • Build and maintain strong working relationships with employees, operations leaders, consultants, regulators, landowners, and community stakeholders.
    • Communicate technical, operational, and regulatory information in a practical and understandable manner.
    • Provide coaching, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing to support operational and mine-planning capabilities across the organization.
    • Proactively identify issues, assess risks, and collaborate with stakeholders to develop practical solutions.

    • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
    • Experience with CAD, GIS, surveying technology, drone mapping platforms, mine-planning software, or production modeling systems preferred.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.

    Other Requirements

    • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly among operational sites, offices, project properties, and public meetings.
    • Willingness to work extended hours, evenings, or weekends when business needs require.
    • Ability to work in both office environments and active aggregate production facilities while wearing required personal protective equipment.
    • Professional conduct with coworkers, management, consultants, regulators, landowners, and the public.
    • Reliable attendance and adherence to assigned work schedules.
