    Position Overview

    The College of Natural and Health Sciences is one of the two largest colleges at UH Hilo, home to 9 departments, 14 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and over 60 full-time faculty. CNHS provides an innovative, career-focused scientific education based in the culture, rich diversity, and natural environment of Hawaii. The college prepares students for success in local, state, regional, and global careers. It teaches basic scientific and mathematical principles and applications that inform future citizens, scientists, managers, and leaders using modern methods and Hawaii Islands living laboratory.

    The Analytical Lab Manager fosters opportunities to collaborate with natural scientists studying the "living laboratory" of this island, and will also be able to make an impact on our dynamic College and greater community in this unique role.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    As tenure-track faculty, the Analytical Lab Manager will be expected to contribute to instruction in CNHS, conduct research that utilizes the lab facilities, publish results, and participate in departmental and university service.

    This position will be primarily responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Analytical Laboratory in CNHS, including:

    • Maintenance, repair, upkeep, and inventory of instrumentation (e.g., DeltaV IRMS, Costech Elemental Analyzer, Thermo ICP-OES, Elementar Vario Isotope Cube, Lachat Quikchem 8500 Series 2, and Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Analyzer), including arranging for instrument service and training visits from authorized companies.
    • Fiscal oversight of all laboratory operations including managing sustainable budgets, overseeing procurement, and invoicing University and non-University clients for analytical services. Provide annual updates to the Dean of CNHS and other relevant business units.
    • Hires, trains, and supervises all laboratory staff, including an Analytical Lab technician and student workers. Conducts annual performance evaluations for all staff.
    • Assists faculty and researchers in experimental design, sample collection, preparation and analysis, analytical quality control procedures, instrument use and operations, and laboratory safety.
    • Develops strong relationships with external stakeholders who use the lab facility recharge center services and provide the primary source of revenue to fund lab operations. Confers with clients regarding experimental design, sample collection, preparation and analysis, analytical methods, and research results.
    • Trains, oversees, schedules, coordinates, and mentors student users of the laboratory facility in support of undergraduate and graduate research or thesis projects.
    • Provides laboratory presentations, tours, and safety reviews for laboratory courses and other courses with research components.
    • Teaches courses on operations of analytical instruments and methods, and other relevant disciplinary areas.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A Ph.D. in a Natural Sciences field at the time of appointment.
    • A minimum of 2 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for instrumental analysis in analytical chemistry, including supervisory and fiscal experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations.
    • Active peer-reviewed publication record.
    • University teaching experience or potential to teach at the university level.

    Desirable Qualifications:

    • Demonstrated experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing analytical instruments.
    • Experience analyzing water, soil, sediment and tissue samples using an Autoanalyzer, IRMS, and ICP-OES.
    • Prior experience with university procurement.
    • Strong organizational and communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of reports and other materials.
    • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
    • Ability and intention to develop a research program in Hawai`i and the insular Pacific region which includes collaboration with UH Hilo faculty.
    • Experience mentoring students or a strong desire to mentor students and incorporate them into research.
    • Extramural grant experience.
