PART I: SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Assistant Student Council Advisor plays a supportive role in promoting student leadership and civic engagement through the student government program. This position assists the Head Student Council Advisor in guiding and supervising student council members during meetings, initiatives, and school-wide activities. The Assistant Student Council Advisor supports the planning, organization, and supervision of events and service projects that involve the broader student body, contributing to positive school culture, student responsibility, and leadership development in alignment with school and district expectations.

PART II: MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college or university

B. CREDENTIALS:

  • Illinois Professional Educator license with the required endorsements as provided in the school code.

C. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of student council purpose, governance structures, and co-curricular participation standards.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and Board of Education policies related to student conduct, supervision, and school-sponsored activities.
  • Skill in clear, professional oral and written communication with students, staff, families, and administrators.
  • Effective interpersonal and active listening skills that support collaboration and student voice.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan meetings, manage events, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to guide and support student-led planning, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills appropriate to advising and supervising student organizations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to model and promote responsible behavior, citizenship, and ethical leadership.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation related to student council activities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in student-centered situations.

PART III: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Facilitates and oversees the planning and implementation of the student council's annual program of meetings, activities, and initiatives.
  • Conducts and supervises regular student council meetings in accordance with school expectations and student governance practices.
  • Guides student officers and members in establishing leadership roles, officer criteria, and class representation structures.
  • Supports student-led planning, decision-making, and implementation of curricular and extracurricular council activities.
  • Oversees and supervises school-wide elections, including officer and class elections, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises major school events, including Homecoming activities, the Homecoming Parade and Dance, and Junior/Senior Prom.
  • Serves as a chaperone and ensures appropriate supervision and student safety during meetings, events, and activities.
  • Coordinates and oversees fundraising activities, ensuring equitable allocation and appropriate use of student council funds.
  • Maintains oversight of consolidated student and class council accounts in compliance with district financial procedures.
  • Plans and coordinates community service and civic engagement activities that represent the school and support local organizations.
  • Collaborates with school clubs, organizations, and administrators to coordinate calendars and school-wide activities.
  • Provides guidance to students regarding school policies, procedures, and expectations for conduct.
  • Promotes leadership development, civic responsibility, and positive school culture through student council initiatives.
  • Maintains accurate records and safeguards confidential student information in accordance with district and legal requirements.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with students, staff, parents, and community partners.
  • Models professionalism, ethical behavior, and positive leadership for student council members.
  • Attends required meetings, trainings, and in-services related to the role.
  • Supervises student participation in district, regional, or statewide student council activities, as applicable.
  • Coordinates and supervises additional school-wide events designed to enhance student engagement and school climate.
  • Performs related duties as required.
