Job Description:

Assistant Superintendent of Schools

The primary objectives are to achieve continuous, measurable improvement in curriculum, instructional practices, teacher development, and student performance throughout the school district.

Under the general direction of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent of Schools provides strategic leadership for curriculum, instruction, and assessment across the Region. This role is responsible for advancing high-quality instructional practices, overseeing the recruitment, development, supervision, and evaluation of professional staff, and managing district-wide assessment and accountability systems.

The Assistant Superintendent plays a key role in supporting and guiding school improvement efforts, including the development, implementation, and monitoring of school improvement plans. Using student performance data, the Assistant Superintendent establishes and monitors accountability measures to ensure continuous growth and improved student outcomes. The position also supports the Superintendent in advancing district priorities and initiatives as assigned.

The Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Superintendent of Region One Schools. Individuals reporting to this position may include clerical support staff, program support specialists, regional academic program coordinators, and, in matters related to curriculum and instruction, supervision, school improvement, and grants, school principals.

The Assistant Superintendent is an active participant in the development and implementation of regional initiatives, professional learning plans for educators, and the Region One Educator Evaluation and Development system. Performance will be evaluated based on progress toward these priorities and overall effectiveness in advancing the districts mission and goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a coherent, standards-aligned curriculum and high-impact instructional practices across the Region; establishes clear goals and metrics and ensures ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness.

Coordinates aspects of the professional staff function in collaboration with the superintendent and principals, including recruitment, selection, placement, supervision, and evaluation.

Directs the coordination, alignment, and implementation of curriculum across all schools to ensure consistency, rigor, and equity in student learning experiences.

Designs and leads a comprehensive, multi-year professional learning system aligned to district priorities; ensures professional development is job-embedded, data-informed, and results in measurable improvements in instructional practice and student outcomes.

Oversees the supervision of teaching and learning across the Region; ensures the effective implementation of evaluation systems, monitors instructional quality, and leads efforts to identify and address areas for growth in educator practice. Strong experience with curriculum development at the K-12 level preferred.

Collaborates with the Superintendent on districtwide accountability systems for school improvement, including the development of benchmarks, progress monitoring structures, and continuous improvement processes.

Supports and, as directed by the Superintendent, supervises school principals, providing coaching, guidance, and performance feedback to strengthen instructional leadership at the building level.
