DEPARTMENT

School for the Blind

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

This position reports to the Principal, School for the Blind, and is responsible for providing Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) instruction, including assistive technology and compensatory instruction, to elementary, middle, and high school students who are visually impaired and may have additional disabilities. The role utilizes Colorado Academic Standards to establish instructional goals and provides assessments to monitor student progress in a safe and supportive learning environment.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provide training to students and staff on assistive technology and Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) best practices
  • Deliver assistive technology instruction and conduct technology evaluations for assigned students
  • Develop lesson plans, adapt instructional materials, and deliver instruction aligned with IEPs and school initiatives
  • Maintain a positive learning environment using appropriate behavior support strategies
  • Apply accommodations and instructional strategies for learners with visual impairments, including task analysis, progress monitoring, and daily living skills
  • Utilize technology to model, teach, and support student learning
  • Demonstrate knowledge of project-based and technology-based instructional practices
  • Organize instructional environments to support collaborative learning
  • Participate in co-teaching teams and multidisciplinary educational teams
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of individualized student objectives
  • Serve as a student advocate for assigned learners
  • Collaborate with service providers and staff to support instruction and school initiatives
  • Evaluate instructional software and digital tools for accessibility compliance
  • Provide accessibility guidance aligned with best practices and standards
  • Participate in team, departmental, and school-wide meetings
  • Provide parent consultation and participate in family engagement activities
  • Engage in professional development and training opportunities
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution; specialization in Visual Impairment required
  • Must hold or be eligible for Colorado educator licensure with endorsement as a Special Education Specialist: Visually Impaired (or comparable)
  • Must hold or be able to obtain Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist (CATIS) certification
  • Experience working with children with visual impairments and/or multiple disabilities
  • Ability to demonstrate Braille competency within the first instructional semester

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of instructional practices for students with visual impairments, including assistive technology and low vision strategies
  • Knowledge of Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) for students with visual impairments
  • Ability to apply standards-based instructional practices across multiple educational settings
  • Proficiency with technology and software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, instructional platforms, databases)
  • Ability to adapt instruction for technology-rich and multi-modal learning environments
  • Knowledge of accessibility tools and technologies for visually impaired learners
  • Ability to set and maintain high academic and behavioral expectations
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Ability to respond constructively to feedback
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment
  • Commitment to achieving proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) in accordance with school policy

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to and is evaluated by the Principal, School for the Blind.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Full-time, scheduled according to the academic calendar (currently 195 days, August through June)
  • Salary determined in accordance with the Teacher Salary Schedule based on education and experience
  • Employment is at-will
